Kirtland Hornets Sting Cuyahoga Heights 53-19

The Hornets opened the game and scored on their first drive when senior Rocco Alfieri bolted for a huge scamper of 38 yards to the end zone and after the point after attempt was blocked by the Red Wolves Francis Connors the Hornets led 6 to 0. After a Red Wolves punt, sophomore Jake LeVerde gained 22 yards to put the Hornets into prime scoring position. On the next play Alfieri rushed 15 yards to the end zone for his second touchdown of the opening quarter and after a successful point after attempt by senior Nick Barisic the Hornets led 13 to 0.

The Hornets then capitalized on a Red Wolves turn over on downs when Alfieri rushed for his third touchdown of the quarter from 15 yards out, the Hornets now led 20 to 0 after another successful point after attempt by Barisic. Things got worse for the Red Wolves when senior quarterback Fletcher Sturgill was picked off by sophomore Alfieri for the Hornets. The defense for the Red Wolves did not give up though as on the ensuing Hornets drive, senior linebacker Derek DiSanza blocked a punt to put the offense into the red zone. This would end the first quarter.

 

The Red Wolves opened the second with a score when Sturgill found junior Nick Armbrust from 5 yards out to put his team on the board, but unfortunately junior kicker Michael Pasterkiewicz failed to convert the point after attempt, so the Hornets led 20 to 6. On the ensuing kickoff, senior Will Beers returned the kickoff 74 yards to the house and after a failed extra point by Baristic the Hornets now led 26 to 6. The Red Wolves turned the ball over on downs again and the Hornets capitalized when senior Will Beers found the end zone from 27 yards out to put the Hornets up 33 to 6 after a successful kick by Baristic.

Things got worse for the Red Wolves offense as they turned the ball over in downs on their next possession inside their own territory. The Hornets capitalized on this as junior Danny Alfieri scored from 34 yards out and Baristic connected on the point after attempt to blow the game open 40 to 6. The red wolves fumbled on their own 8-yard line and put the Hornets into prime scoring position.  On the next play for the Hornets, Danny Alfieri scores from 5 yards out.  After a good extra point by Barisic, the Hornets led 47 to 6.  This would lead us to halftime.

 

The Red Wolves were looking to capitalize on getting the ball to start the second half but fumbled the kickoff and it was recovered by freshman Carter Luzar for the Hornets. The Hornets then stretched the lead even further when junior Max Paul connected with Luzar for a 27-yard touchdown and after a failed two-point conversion try, the Hornets led 53 to 6. The Red Wolves scored on their next possession as Connors found the end zone from 4 yards out and after a successful point after attempt by Pasterkiewicz the Hornets led 53 to 13.  The Hornets then fumbled the ensuing kickoff and the Red Wolves recovered to close the third quarter.

 

The Red Wolves capitalized on this turn over by the Hornets as Sturgill connected with Connors from 8 yards out, but the scoring ended there as Pasterkiewicz missed the extra point and the Hornets led 53 to 19 and since the clock ran the entire second half, the game ended.

 

The players of the game are senior Rocco Alfieri for the Kirtland Hornets as he had 86 rushing yards and three touchdowns all coming in the first quarter along with an interception, as for the Red Wolves the player of the game honors goes to senior Francis Connors as he had 71 yards rushing and a touchdown.

 

Next week the Hornets will play the winner of Mogadore and Mineral Ridge as they move on in search of another championship in division six, the Red Wolves on the other hand end their successful season with this loss.
