Parma Heights, OH– Holy Name took down Lakewood 59-54 to become the final ever GLC champions on a senior night no one will forget.
The Green Wave started all 5 of their seniors for this game. However, Lakewood took advantage of this as they jumped out to a quick 8-0 lead. Luke Vannucci and Jack Gowan both knocked down quick triples and Lucas Seguine added 2 points from the line. Coach Patton turned to usual starters Max Bollin and Drew Styers to provide HN with a spark. It didn’t take long for them to make an impact as the Green and White went on an 8-0 run of their own to tie the game up at 8 all. Gowan knocked down his second 3 of the quarter to restore the Lakewood advantage, but Adam Humenik quickly negated it with a triple of his own. Overall, Holy Name outscored the Rangers 12-9 following the introduction Bollin and Styers, but still trailed 17-12 heading into the second quarter.
Lakewood came out flat in the second as they only put up 4 points. Luke Bonvissuto and Vannucci combined for the 4 Ranger points. The Green Wave took advantage of the lack of scoring as they began to pull away. Aaron Riley knocked down his first triple of the night. Humenik added another 3 while Bollin added 7 and Styers added 4. Overall, HN won the second quarter 17-4. Heading into halftime, Holy Name led 29-21.
Lakewood came out of the half and battled. After posting only 4 points in the second quarter, the Ranger offense turned the heat back up and scored 17 points. Seguine led the way as he posted 9 of his 20 total points. Drew Jablonowski had a quiet first half but posted 5 points in the third. The other 3 points came from Bonvissuto. For the Green Wave, Humenik added 6 points to his tally. Riley connected on his second triple while Bollin and Styers each made a field goal. Heading into the fourth quarter, all was still to play for as Holy name led 42-38.
The physicality from the first three quarters climaxed in the final frame. It didn’t take long for both teams to enter the bonus and to have some players foul out. The first domino to fall was Styers as he exited the game with 10 points. A few minutes later, Jablonowski followed suit after scoring 4 more points which gave him 9 points on the night. For Lakewood, Seguine added his final 7 points of the contest. Vannucci added 5 of his own to round out the scoring for the Rangers. For HN, the name of the game was to maintain a 2-possession lead. With many field goals, they were able to do so. The only time Lakewood cut the advantage to 1 possession was on an and one from Vannucci. The Rangers played the Namers tough, but it was the home team who prevailed 59-54 to seal the conference title.
This contest had a lot less scoring than the first meeting of these GLC heavyweights back in January. HN and Lakewood combined for 160 points earlier this year but only 113 tonight. Up next for the Rangers are the Midview Middies on February 28 for round 1 of the OHSAA playoffs. Holy Name will close out the regular season with two road games at Strongsville and Buckeye this coming week.
