True Center of the Year
Mia Donald of North Olmsted
I remember growing up and watching the NBA, one of the reasons it was so great back then and so awful now, is because back then they had true centers. I recall players like David Robinson, Dikembe Mutombo, Hakeem Olajuwon, Brad Daughtery, Shaq and Patrick Ewing, just to name a few, helping me fall in love with the game. Now a days, it is just pass it around the perimeter until someone chucks up a three pointer. Or drive and kick, drive and kick, drive and kick… Anyway, before I start yelling at clouds, I want to shout out Mia Donald of North Olmsted for being a true center.
Donald knew how to use her frame to get position in the paint and then convert it into points. She did this on a regular basis and became the number one threat for the Eagles. Unless she got into foul trouble, she couldn’t be contained and teams would struggle trying to stop her scoring presence.
I spoke with Head Coach Nolan Turpin about her impact on the Eagles this year, “Mia Donald is finishing up an incredible career at North Olmsted. Mia’s ability to produce every game while being the center of opposing teams game-plans, tells you exactly what you need to know about her. She battles everyday to help her team compete and that resulted in nearly averaging a double-double (10 pts & 9.5 reb).
Mia was also the anchor of our defense. She averaged 1.4 stl and 2.4 blk and always made scoring inside very difficult for opponents. Everything Mia has accomplished in her career has come from the work ethic she developed. She has earned everything that has come her way. I am grateful and proud to have coached her for the past 2 seasons and I am excited to watch her continue her career at Wheeling next season!”
Honorable mention goes to Aubrey Fischer of Hoover and Liz Lang of Rocky River.
