Field tops Kent Roosevelt, 13-7, in high scoring affair

Kent, Ohio – The Field Falcons defeated the Kent Roosevelt Rough Riders, 13-7, at Schoonover Stadium in both teams’ Senior nights.

Garit Greene led things off with a walk. After a Baumberger flyout, Kayden Smith singled to right to put runners on first and second. Caleb Gartner hit a grounder to second, however an error on the throw enabled Greene to score, putting Field up 1-0.

Donovan Daetwyler drew a walk with two outs, and stole second on a pickoff attempt. He scored on an errant throw into left field to tie the score at 1.

In the top of the second inning, Drexal McAmis led off with a walk, and a Gavin Greene single put runners on first and second. Bradley McBroom followed up with a ground-rule double to left field to put Field up, 2-1. Gavin Greene scored on a wild pitch to increase the lead to 3-1. Braxton Baumberger beat out a grounder to third, scoring McBroom and making the score 4-1. Kayden Smith picked up his second hit with a single to right field. This scored Logan Lonzrick, who drew a walk. Smith drew a throw to first base, and Baumberger hustled home, increasing the lead to 6-1.

Gavin Greene drew a bases-loaded walk to increase the score to 7-1.

The Rough Riders loaded the bases in the bottom of the second inning, and senior Jon Jon Smith hit a bases loaded double down the left field line to cut the deficit to 7-4. He was thrown out attempting to stretch his double into a triple. After a scoreless top of the third from relief pitcher Maccarone, Kent Roosevelt added another run.

Donovan Daetwyler led off with a single to left field, and eventually came around and scored on a double from Cole Wood. This cut the Rough Rider deficit to 7-5.

In the top of the fourth, Kayden Smith hit a double to right field, and advanced to third on a wild pitch. He eventually scored on a Caleb Gartner sacrifice fly to increase the lead to 8-5.

Relief pitcher Logan Homan worked around a walk and held the Riders scoreless in the bottom of the fourth. Field got another run in the top of the fifth when CJ Little hit a single. Logan Lonzrick followed up with a single, and Little eventually scored on a sac fly from Braxton Baumberger to increase the lead to 9-5.

Haney had an RBI double in the bottom of the fifth inning to cut the Rider deficit to 9-6.

The Falcons broke it open with two outs in the top of the sixth. Drexal McAmis hit a single up the middle, and walks by Gavin Greene and CJ Little loaded the bases. Logan Lonzrick had a two-run single up the middle to score McAmis and Greene, increasing the lead to 11-6. Garit Greene followed up with an RBI single to score Little and make the lead 12-6. Braxton Baumberger followed with an RBI single of his own to increase the lead to 13-6.

Field, now 20-7, defeated Niles McKinley, 7-2, on May 17th to advance to the district semifinals. They will take on #6 Ursuline on Monday, May 22nd, in the Struthers District semifinals at Bob Cene Park. Landon Homan went 3.2 innings in relief, allowing one earned run on two hits, walking one, and striking out seven.

Kent Roosevelt finishes their season at 17-8. Senior Cole Wood went 2-3 with a pair of doubles and RBI, and struck out a batter in relief.
