With the NBA playoffs set to begin this Saturday, the Cleveland Cavaliers are heading into the postseason as the No. 4 seed, matching up with the No. 5-seeded Toronto Raptors in what should be a very competitive first-round series.
For Cavs fans, this isn’t about just making the playoffs; it’s about what this team could actually do once they are there and what they have to prove.
The Cavs have shown all season that they can compete. Battling injuries throughout the entire season, which meant having different starting lineups for different games. With the help of good coaching, the Cavs still managed to go 52-30. But the playoffs are a completely different level. The game slows down, every possession matters more, and your best players have to step it up when it counts most. That’s where a lot of attention is going to be placed on the Cavs top players.
In past seasons, a lot of pressure has fallen on Donovan Mitchell to carry the offense. When defenses become more aggressive in the playoffs, that’s not always easy to do alone. This year can be different though. Cleveland traded away point guard Darius Garland for superstar James Harden, who should help Cleveland out in a huge way in the playoffs. Or so it seems.
In the past, a lot of the attention around James Harden in the playoffs hasn’t always been positive. He is known for putting up big regular-season numbers year after year, but as soon as the playoffs start, he does not play up to that same level. Harden has always faced criticism for coming up short. This year feels like it has the potential to be different though.
James Harden is surrounded by a team that can take a lot of the pressure off him. Players like Mitchell, Evan Mobley, and Jarrett Allen are unlike any players he has ever played with. They all excel at different skills, which should help out tremendously. As long as Harden can stay aggressive and play at a high level when it matters most, it could go a long way for this Cavs team in the playoffs, and Harden can prove the haters wrong.
The matchup with Toronto won’t be easy. The Raptors are known for their ability to make games messy and difficult for the other team to win. They are led by the All-Star duo of Brandon Ingram and Scottie Barnes, but also have additional key players. They do a great job playing as a team and causing problems on both ends of the floor, which can prove to be difficult for the Cavs.
Because of that, one of the biggest things to watch out for will be how Cleveland handles this pressure. Will they be able to stay composed in close games? Can they execute late when every possession matters? It is these types of moments that usually decide a playoff series.
The Cavs have a lot to prove in this first-round matchup. They traded their young point guard, Darius Garland, for a “win now” player in James Harden. Many have been saying that if they don’t at minimum make the Eastern Conference Finals, they lost that trade. We will see what happens as the Cavs start this Saturday at 1:00, kicking off the 2026 NBA playoffs.
