A nice summers walk this week took me through beautiful Olmsted Falls. As I passed by Pacific Junction desperately trying to avoid Walk About Wednesday, I couldn’t help but notice and appreciate the history and class that resonates from Chestnut Grove Cemetery. I’ll be honest when I say that despite driving past it plenty of times over the years I never stopped to bask in its beauty and truly appreciate the splendor of it. While cemeteries aren’t exactly on my list of places to visit, there is a certain aura of calm, peace and finality to them. Chestnut Grove Cemetery located at 7789 Lewis Road displayed all of that. I was overwhelmed with its beauty and class almost instantly.
Unlike Holy Cross Cemetery on Brook Park road, this was more serine and much more private. I could tell instantly that it was steeped in history and truly a honorable place to lay a loved one at rest. Per their website I later learned that settlers from New England are buried there and include descendants of William Bradford, second governor of the Plymouth Colony. Julie Carter Northrop, granddaughter of one of Cleveland’s early settlers, Lorenzo Carter. I also learned that Veterans of six wars are honored there. The Daughters of the American Revolution recorded the cemetery’s tombstone engravings and cenotaphs in 1961.
I also learned that they are a non-denominational Cemetery that serves families from the Olmsted Falls community. Thus, as long as you resided in Olmsted Falls or Township at least once in your life, you are welcome to be buried there. As we all surround ourselves with the craziness of everyday life, it was nice to take a step back and just soak in the beauty that mother nature can give us. This little cemetery in Olmsted Falls was a perfect example of that.
So, while Walk About Wednesdays at Pacific Junction continues to be a giant miss, this beautiful landscape only one street over is something to behold. Be sure to check it out the next time you visit beautiful Historic Olmsted Falls.
