Sandusky, OH – Third seed, Central Catholic Fighting Irish (13-1) triumphs over the top seed, Avon Eagles (12-2) in the OHSAA Region 6 Championship game.
Almost exactly one year ago, Avon and Central Catholic played in the 2021 Region 6 Championship game. The Eagles secured the win in overtime with a two point conversion.
Central Catholic used that loss as fuel to the fire and came back for revenge in this season.
QUARTER 1:
On Avon’s first possession, senior quarterback Sam DeTillio’s pass was intercepted on the five-yard line by senior defensive back Braiden Vargas.
The Fighting Irish would capitalize on the opportunity, getting on the board first as senior running back Chris Edmonds scored on a 23-yard touchdown run.
Senior Brian Bishop’s extra-point kick extended the lead to 7-0 in the opening quarter.
QUARTER 2:
Two minutes into the quarter, Central Catholic’s punter dropped the snap and Avon gained terrific field position at the 41-yard line.
Detillio completed the drive on second and goal, finding a hole on the right side for a three-yard touchdown run.
With two minutes left in the half, senior nickelback R.J. Maddox stripped the ball from Detillo.
Senior linebacker Cody Schuberg recovered the fumble for a game changing play.
In just three plays, Edmonds stumbled into the endzone on an eight-yard touchdown run.
Central Catholic up 14-7 at the half.
QUARTER 3:
Central Catholic built off of their momentum, getting on the board early in the second half.
Senior quarterback Ty’Waun Clark connected with senior receiver Braden Awls for a 7-yard touchdown reception.
Avon struggled offensively due to penalties and a stout Central Catholic defense, resulting in a scoreless third quarter for the Eagles.
QUARTER 4:
The Fighting Irish would not let off the gas, finding the endzone just two minutes into the fourth quarter.
Once again, Edmonds found a hole up the middle, completing a 17-yard touchdown run.
In attempts to close the gap, Avon marched down the field on a 70-yard drive, ending with a one-yard touchdown run by senior running back Gavin Ehrhardt.
Central Catholic was forced to a quick punt.
Avon answered on fourth-and-goal as Detillio plowed through the endzone on a two-yard touchdown run.
In a two-point conversion attempt, Avon was stopped just shy of the endzone, resulting in an eight point difference with 3:45 left of the contest.
Central Catholic would run down the clock, securing the win 28-20 over Avon.
Chris Edmonds would pace the offense with over 200 rushing yards and three touchdowns.
Next up: Central Catholic will begin to prepare for the Kings Knights next Friday at 7pm.
