In this week of high school football, the Buckeye Bucks traveled to Amherst where they would defeat the Comets to improve to 2-0. The Bucks run game proved to be too much for the Comets as they gave up over 370 yards on the ground. The passing game did come into effect however, just for varied reasons. The Bucks would pass the ball when they were forced into 3rd down and long situations. While the Comets hoped to test the Bucks secondary and attacked from the air on 72% of their plays. Even though the score looks like the Bucks hammered their opponent, the Comets would still put up much of a fight.

1st Quarter

The Comets started testing the Bucks secondary early. They tried several screens and deep throws to keep the bucks on edge. While the Bucks would hope to get the ground game going. The Comets front seven continually bottled up the Bucks rushing attack. Lanes were not opening, and the Comets were relentless. The Bucks did have a chance to score on a 31-yard field goal. The kick was missed however, and the score remained 0-0.

2nd Quarter

Starting the second quarter, the Comets were on the move. Hoping to beat the Bucks secondary, they threw a deep pass that was intercepted by Bucks defender Ranger Metter. The Bucks hoped to use this momentum to score. After a 31-yard by quarterback Case Murray Jr., the Bucks were held to a 4th and 11 on the Comets 31. Deciding to go for it, Murray threw a deep pass towards the middle of the field. The catch was made by Bucks Wide receiver Austin Hyre after it was tipped by the defender.

With momentum on their side, the Bucks continued to shut down the Comets offense. Reading their plays and continuing to get blocked passes by defensive back Tate McCourt and linebacker Gage Nagy. Late in the 2nd quarter, thanks to some running and passing by Murray, the Bucks ended the drive with a 4-yard touchdown run by Gage Nagy. Making the score at the end of the 1st half 14-0 in the Bucks favor.

3rd Quarter

In the beginning of the second half, the Comets came back swinging. Hoping to stop the momentum of the Bucks But after holding them to a three and out on their first drive, the Comets would give up a 4-yard touchdown run to Gage Nagy. The Comets offensive would respond quickly. They drove down the field using the run game to keep the Bucks on their heels while the passing game started to open. The drive would end with a 13-yard touchdown run by J.R Bires. Even though the PAT was missed, the Comets would not stop the fight.

Seeing them drive down the field with ease, the Bucks knew they had to respond. On their next possession, Running Back Troy McCann, after being bottled up most of the game, broke for a 64-yard touchdown run. Bringing momentum back in the Bucks favor.

 4th Quarter

In the fourth quarter, after the Comets failed to put another drive together, the Bucks would chew up over six minutes of clock time as they tried to kick a field goal with 2:43 left to go in the game. The Comets would block it however, bringing in new life to their team. This inspires the offense to go into a tear. They scorched the Bucks defense and drove over 80 yards down the field to score. Ending with a 15-yard touchdown run by J.R Bires. The Comets did attempt the onside kick, but the Bucks recovered it. The Bucks kneeled and ended the game with the Bucks winning 28-13. The Bucks (2-0) will host Ellet (Akron) next week. While the Comets (1-1) will travel to North Olmsted hoping to rebound from this week’s loss.

 Player of the Game

The player of the game was once again Troy McCann. While Amherst front seven challenged him, McCann finished the evening with 214 yards rushing on 21 carries (Avg. 10 yards per carry) with a touchdown and 23 receiving yards.
