Brecksville-Broadview Heights, OH — Brecksville defeated Revere in a Friday night brawl that was hard-fought yard by yard by both teams. With a final score of 28-7, both teams shook up Week 10 of the OHSAA season with complex plays and long battles.
The Revere Minutemen kicked off this Friday night game against the Brecksville Bees for Week 10 of the OHSAA season. The game opened with a steady drive up the field from the home team, making it clear to Revere that they needed to keep their bases covered on defense if they wanted to win this game.
Both teams quickly put each other in a gridlock, meaning Brecksville needed to get creative with how they approached their offensive plays. In the first series, Revere turned the ball over at the 8:00 mark, with both teams fighting hard for every yard they could gain. It was a strong opening for both teams.
Revere moved into its first offensive series of the game, slowly climbing up the field just as Brecksville had. A key connection between QB Carter Hajdu and WR TJ Meech proved to be what they needed to get past the defensive line. With a 20-yard completion, Revere started charging up the field.
The play after that was another 15-yard completion from Hajdu to Meech, meaning Revere was entering the hot zone for a touchdown. But with a key sack from Tyler Soeder, Brecksville sent Revere back almost the entire length of the previous pass.
This was followed by an interception and a 15-yard rush from Bryndan Williams, meaning Brecksville quickly switched back to offense with one minute remaining in the first quarter. Brecksville was unable to make any concrete plays with the time remaining, leaving the score at 0-0 as the teams headed into the second quarter.
Moving into the second quarter, Brecksville opened the series with a turnover back to Revere, meaning the Minutemen had another chance to make some moves against Brecksville. But Brecksville quickly brought Revere’s offense to fourth down, forcing another turnover and giving the Bees possession once again.
Brecksville’s second offensive series of the quarter featured a key breakthrough from senior Tut Matchittom with a 30-yard rush. This put Brecksville within 10 yards of the end zone, and senior Zach Aquila saw the opportunity to capitalize with a touchdown.
This was followed by an extra point from Maychie Schreiber, putting seven points on the board for the Brecksville Bees and making the score 7-0 at 7:35 of the second quarter. Revere now had a point gap to overcome if they wanted to win this game.
Back on offense, Revere began slowly making its way up the field again through a series of plays. But Brecksville made a concrete stop in its tracks, turning the tables and putting Revere back on defense.
Brecksville once again brought a new change of pace to the field in the second quarter. Matchittom brought the hands and feet needed to score a 21-yard touchdown. Schreiber got the extra point, putting another seven points on the board for Brecksville and creating an ever-growing mountain for Revere to climb.
This made the score 14-0 at 2:33 of the second quarter, with Brecksville holding a fierce lead and Revere’s offense on the back foot toward the end of the first half. Forced to turn over the ball with 1:33 remaining on the clock, Revere found itself back on defense to close out the first half, leaving the score unchanged heading into halftime.
Moving into the third quarter, Revere got another chance to reach the end zone with the opening possession. Brecksville’s defense made the stop once again, however, meaning Revere was faced with two problems: an opponent’s offense making breakthroughs and an opponent’s unshakeable defense.
Brecksville’s offensive drive was brought to a sudden halt by Revere as the Bees tried to make the same breakthroughs and plays they had in the first half. Revere was there to make the stop, forcing a turnover and putting both teams back in the gridlock that had defined the game from the start.
Revere continued to struggle to find a way to reach the end zone, with Brecksville meeting them at every yard. This forced another turnover, sending Brecksville back onto offense. For Alex Henegar and Williams, this was an opportunity to score once again.
Henegar launched a 40-yard pass to Williams, who finished the play with a short rush and a touchdown for the Brecksville Bees. Schreiber scored another extra point, making the new score 21-0 with 1:34 left in the third quarter.
After obtaining possession of the ball, Revere did not have enough wiggle room to make any major plays, and its series carried the game into the fourth quarter.
As the fourth quarter began, Revere found itself within 20 yards of the end zone, marking its closest opportunity to score since the game started. With Meech and Hajdu connecting to capitalize, Meech scored Revere’s first touchdown of the night. Senior David Kennedy added the extra point, making the new score 21-7.
As Brecksville shifted its focus toward finishing off the game, Revere found a new fire within itself and began making stops against the Bees on their home turf. That was until Zac Woods broke through the defensive line, making a 35-yard rush across the field.
This put Brecksville close to the end zone once again, within five yards of crossing the finish line for another six points. And cross that line they did, with senior Marc Sokolowski scoring another touchdown. Schreiber added the extra point, making the new score 28-7.
Revere, unable to stop the onslaught from Brecksville’s relentless offense and defense, was looking for one more touchdown before the game closed out. Unfortunately, the boys in blue were not so lucky, closing out Week 10 on Brecksville’s home turf with a final score of 28-7.
