Berea-Midpark defeated Brecksville-Broadview Heights 26-13 after building an early lead and shutting down the Bees in the second half.
Berea-Midpark opened the game with a big play when No. 1 Nick Reece broke free for a 76-yard rushing touchdown on the second play. The extra-point attempt was unsuccessful, giving the Titans a 6-0 lead.
The Titans added another touchdown when Reece broke free for a 48-yard run. Another missed extra point kept the score at 12-0.
Brecksville-Broadview Heights responded when No. 10 Tyler Soeder rushed for a 20-yard touchdown. The Bees made the extra point to cut Berea-Midpark’s lead to 12-7.
A mistake by Brecksville-Broadview Heights on the following kickoff gave Berea-Midpark the ball at the Bees’ 20-yard line. Reece took advantage of the short field by scoring on a 25-yard run. Quarterback Dylan Papushak then connected with No. 10 Andre Alexander for the two-point conversion, extending the lead to 20-7.
Brecksville-Broadview Heights recovered a bad snap by Berea-Midpark early in the second quarter, but the Bees could not turn the opportunity into points. Berea-Midpark’s No. 13 Mayson Price later intercepted a pass, giving the Titans possession at the Brecksville-Broadview Heights 19-yard line.
Papushak capitalized on the turnover by finding No. 18 Adonis Shider for a 19-yard touchdown. Brecksville-Broadview Heights stopped the two-point attempt when No. 71 Isaac Guzoski recorded a sack, leaving Berea-Midpark ahead 26-7.
The Bees scored again before halftime when quarterback Chris Soeder rushed into the end zone. Berea-Midpark blocked the extra-point attempt, and the Titans entered halftime with a 26-13 lead.
Both defenses played well throughout the second half, and neither team scored again. Berea-Midpark focused on running as much time off the clock as possible. Alexander recorded an interception to stop one of the Bees’ drives.
The Titans also attempted a fake punt in the fourth quarter that nearly succeeded, with Reece gaining 25 yards on the play. Berea-Midpark’s defense protected the lead for the remainder of the game to secure the 26-13 victory.
