Behind a dominant second half, the Bay Rockets girls lacrosse team took down the Magnificat Blue Streaks by a score of 17-10.
The Blue Streaks got out to an early 2-1 lead with goals from Grace Quinn and Courtney Convery. However, the Rockets exploded for 4 goals in the final 3 minutes of the first quarter. Goals from Gracie Fitchpatrick, Avery Schriner, Nolie Piktel, and Layla Meaux put the Rockets in front 5-2 going into the second.
Magnificat was able to fight back, cutting the deficit to 5-4. Bay then responded with scores from Meaux and Jill Tennant to extend their lead to 7-4. Convery added another goal late in the second quarter to make it a 7-5 game at the halfway point.
Alena Martinez brought the Blue Streaks within one of the lead with a goal just a minute into the third. The Rockets took off after that, scoring 3 times in a 2 minute span to go up 10-6. The Blue Streaks refused to go quiet, as Grace Quinn and Convery found the back of the net to make it 10-8.
Every time it seemed like Magnificat was getting back into the game, Bay came back firing. Another run of 3 straight goals, 2 from Meaux and 1 from Fitchpatrick, put them ahead 13-8 after the third quarter. The fourth quarter finally saw them pull away. Meaux’s 6th goal made it 14-8 with 10:28 to go.
Later on, Avery Schriner gave the Rockets their largest lead of the game at 17-9. Courtney Convery scored her 4th goal for the Blue Streaks with 10 seconds remaining to make it a 17-10 final. Meaux and Fitchpatrick starred for the Rockets, combining for 10 goals on the night. Other standouts for the Rockets included Schriner, Jill Tennant and Nolie Piktel, who all scored twice.
Rockets coach Victoria Budzyn said after the game that her team has grown a lot this season, saying that “We know the skill we have on our team, we know the level that we should be playing at, and sometimes that’s a hard expectation to uphold. In the last couple games we have been stepping up and playing at the level we know we can.”
