by AMHERST,OH – Week 5 of Friday Night Lights brought the Avon Lake Shoremen to Amherst for a Southwestern Conference matchup with the Amherst Comets. Coming off their first win of the season against Midview, the Shoremen looked to carry that momentum into their second straight victory.
Coach Tom Thome and the Amherst Comets entered at 3-1, searching for their first conference win after falling to Berea-Midpark the previous week. Coach Matt Kostelnik and the Shoremen entered at 1-3 following their 31-7 victory over Midview.
The game opened with both defenses making an immediate impact. Amherst put together a well-balanced drive and moved the ball down the field before running back Ethan Layne punched it into the end zone to give the Comets the early lead.
Amherst had another opportunity to score after Kris Hoopes intercepted a pass and returned it 41 yards to the Avon Lake 2-yard line. The Shoremen defense responded with a tremendous goal-line stand, stopping four straight rushing attempts to keep the Comets out of the end zone.
Avon Lake struggled to maintain offensive momentum in the first half as penalties erased big plays and high snaps created additional problems. Its defense, however, continued to keep the Shoremen within striking distance by limiting Amherst’s rushing attack and consistently applying pressure to the quarterback.
Quarterback Michael Ambrose eventually found his rhythm through the air, moving the Shoremen down the field before connecting with wide receiver Mason Ambrose for a 14-yard touchdown. The score tied the game at 7-7.
Both defenses continued to control the game as the first half progressed. Strong run defense forced both teams to rely more heavily on the passing game, while penalties prevented either offense from finding consistent rhythm.
The teams entered halftime tied at 7-7.
Avon Lake took control coming out of the break. Mason Ambrose caught a screen pass and turned it into a 44-yard touchdown, giving the Shoremen their first lead of the night at 14-7.
The Shoremen then began clicking on both sides of the ball. Avon Lake’s defense recorded four sack on the game and continued to pressure Amherst, while the offense started putting together cleaner drives without the penalties that had slowed it down earlier.
The rushing attack began picking up chunks of yardage, allowing Avon Lake to control the clock. Ambrose also came through with his legs, converting crucial third downs with quarterback sneaks. After moving the ball down the field on the ground, Ambrose finished the drive by connecting with Andrew Good for a 15-yard touchdown, extending the lead.
Avon Lake carried its momentum into the fourth quarter, where Drake Rudnicki delivered the biggest play of the night. Rudnicki broke free for a 55-yard touchdown run, pushing the Shoremen’s lead to 31-7 and putting the game out of reach.
The Shoremen defense continued to shut down Amherst for the remainder of the game, allowing Avon Lake to pull away in the second half and secure its second consecutive victory.
Ambrose led the Shoremen offense by completing 15 of 23 passes for 224 yards and two touchdowns while adding 71 rushing yards on nine carries. Mason Ambrose finished with six receptions for 97 yards and two touchdowns, while Good added a 15-yard touchdown reception. Rudnicki provided the game’s final score with his 55-yard touchdown run.
The 31-7 victory improved Avon Lake to 2-3 on the season, while Amherst fell to 3-2.

For Amherst, Jack Coleman finished with six receptions for 97 yards and seven rushing attempts for 19 yards.
