Avon dominates Westlake in Round 1 win

The Avon Eagles showed why they are the number one seed in their region during Friday night’s victory over the Westlake Demons.

Avon’s Jakorion Caffey took the handoff 26-yards to start the scoring for the Eagles just two minutes into the game.

The Demons started their next drive in the air as they could not get the ground game going. Westlake’s sophomore quarterback Sam Brucchieri completed a few passes and moved the ball into Eagles territory, but the visitors were forced to punt.

Avon took over at their 28-yard line and got to work. Quarterback Sam DeTillio completed a screen to start the drive to Ethan Holbrook for 43-yards. The two connected three plays later to find the end zone from 30-yards out.

DeTillio to Holbrook became a theme of the first half. DeTillio completed a 25-yard pass to Holbrook to make it 21-0 Eagles at the end of the first.

Holbrook found footing in the second, and a 90-yard drag route up the sideline docked his third score of the night.

Avon got tricky as the quarter ticked on. Running back Gavin Ehrhardt completed a throwback pass to DeTillio for a 30-yard gain. Five plays later, Caffey punched in his second score of the game from five-yards out to make the score 35-0 with just 22 seconds left in the half.

The Eagles recovered a muffed kickoff at the nine-yard line and threatened to make the lead bigger. DeTillio found Holbrook from 14-yards out, giving the home team a 42-0 lead at halftime.

DeTillio and Holbrook controlled the first half and connected for 202-yards and four touchdowns.

Avon’s Nick Colburn ran the ball 17-yards to tally the final score of the night, settling the score 49-0 late in the third.

The Eagles will move on in the playoffs to keep their state title hopes alive.

The Players of the Game were Avon’s Ethan Holbrook and Westlake’s Sam Brucchieri.
