Athens Falls Short to Marietta In Overtime, 36-28

Marietta, Ohio- The Athens Bulldogs took on the Marietta Tigers in their first away game of the season on Friday September 3rd, 2021. The Bulldogs and Tigers competed in a non-conference game.

The game was held on a cool, sunny evening at the Don Drumm Stadium.

At the start of the first quarter the Bulldogs showed incredible enthusiasm on defense.

Although the first quarter ended scoreless, the Bulldogs took the ball down the field, and displayed great determination to keep that same energy throughout the game.

The young Bulldogs haven’t scored yet this season, so they came to the Don Drumm Stadium eager to put a score on the board.

A four-yard touchdown run by Marietta’s senior, Zach Bartlett, started the second quarter. The 20-yard kick was good. Making the score 7-0, Tigers.

Then Athens brought the ball down to the 44-yard line by an amazing pass to Marcus Stevers.

A 25-yard touchdown pass to Stevers, put Athens on the board. The extra point was good. Score 7-7 with three minutes and 57 seconds remaining in the second quarter.

This was the first score the Bulldogs have made this season. It was the motivation to fire them up.

Athens defense then intercepted the ball at the 28-yard line.

Athens, Stevers, scored a touchdown after the Tigers turned over the ball. The extra point was good making the score 14-7, Athens. One minute and 17 seconds remained in the second quarter.

The first half ended 14-7, Athens Bulldogs.

The Bulldog fans that traveled the journey to Marietta were cheering loud at half-time for their team.

To start out the third quarter Marietta had a big play bringing them down to the five-yard line which resulted in a touchdown by Bartlett. The extra point was good, making the score 14-14.

A seven-yard touchdown run by Athens, Luke Brandes, put the Bulldogs in the lead. The extra point was good. 21-14 Athens Bulldogs. 37 seconds remained in the third quarter.

Third quarter ended 21-14, Athens Bulldogs.

In the fourth quarter, a four-yard touchdown run by Marietta’s, Bartlett, and a good extra point put the score at a tie yet again, 21-21.

The Bulldogs were quick to take the ball down to the four-yard line. Which resulted in a touchdown by Brandes. The extra point was good making the score 28-21, Athens. Four minutes and 35 seconds remained in the 4th quarter.

A touchdown by Marietta’s, Bartlett, and a good extra point, put the score at a tie yet again with 41 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter.

The 4th quarter ended in a tie, 28-28.

Marietta’s, Bartlett, scored his fifth touchdown in overtime and the two-point conversion was good. The score, 36-28 Marietta Tigers.

The Bulldogs fumbled the ball and the Tigers recovered it, making the final score 36-28, Marietta Tigers.

The Athens Bulldogs couldn’t bring home the victory, but they did play an incredible game that kept the fans on their toes. They will play against Alexander High School next Friday.
