Are the Cavaliers finally headed in the right direction?

The Cleveland Cavaliers 2019/20 season was unfortunately cut short by the Corona-virus pandemic in the United States.  It is unknown at this point as to whether or not the season will start back up at some point or be cancelled.

The Cavaliers suspended season record currently sits at 19-46.  Their last win on Sunday, March 8th over San Antonio tied their win total from the 2018/19 season in 19 less games.

So from that standpoint you can say that the team has made progress this season.  Let’s dig a little deeper and look at some of the factors that have the Cavaliers trending in the right direction.

  • Young Talent

The Cavaliers infused some young talent into the roster during the 2019 NBA draft.  With the 5th pick Cleveland chose Vanderbilt point guard Darius Garland.  This season Garland has averaged 12.3 points & 3.9 assists per game while shooting 40% from the field.

Over his last 20+ games those numbers increased to 15 points, 5 assists & 52% shooting.  Garland has superior court vision for a 20-year old.  He has gotten better at finding open shooters and making lob passes to the Cavaliers bigs.  Garland looks to be the Cavaliers point guard of the future.

Their second selection in the first round at #26 was Dylan Windler out of Belmont.  Unfortunately Windler suffered a stress fracture in his left leg during training camp that has kept him out all season.  He would have had the opportunity to take some minutes from Cedi Osman at the three.  The southpaw sharpshooter should play a big role going forward.

Last but not least the Cavaliers traded back into the first round at pick 30 and snagged what could end up being the steal of the draft in USC guard Kevin Porter Jr.  Porter is averaging 10 points per game & shooting 44% this season.   Over his last 14 games (not counting his last game when he suffered a concussion) Porter averaged 14.2 points & scored his season high of 30 pts on 2/24 vs Miami.  The 19-year is an athletic freak with loads of potential.  He looks to be the starting two guard of the future.
