Anthony Wayne defeats Amherst Steele, 7-3, in OHSAA Division II state championship

Akron, Ohio – Anthony Wayne defeated Amherst Steele, 7-3, in the OHSAA Division II state championship game on Saturday evening at Canal Park in Akron.

Due to a rain delay lasting nearly four hours pushing each of the games behind schedule, the first pitch did not take place until 10:10pm.

Anthony Wayne jumped ahead, 1-0, thanks to an RBI single from Lucas Potkanowicz, plating Eli Donawa. Crue Carroll added an RBI single in the top of the second, increasing the lead to 2-0. The Generals would add three more runs in the top of the third, as Ben Niecarz hit an RBI single to plate Max Crandell. Niecarz, along with Jett Smith, would score on a wild pitch, extended the lead to 5-0.

Steele would counter, scoring a pair of runs on an RBI grounder from Caleb Melendez, and from Cole Charles on a wild pitch. Anthony Wayne would respond with a couple of runs on a fielder’s choice and an error to increase their lead to 7-2 in the top of the fourth.

Amherst looked to rally, loading the bases in the bottom of the sixth inning, but could only muster one run for the final margin.
