CLEVELAND, OH – A wild game saw Akron overcome a 12 point halftime deficit to comeback in the second and win 79-76 in thrilling fashion over Toledo. This is the third straight MAC Championship win for Akron as they will now march into NCAA Madness late next week. It was tied at 76 with 6 seconds to go when Shammah Scott hit a three pointer from the elbow to win it for the Zips!
Akron scored 27 off the bench, combined with 16 points off turnover, 42 points in the paint and sinking 10 from deep for 30 of their 79 points to make up for just going a paltry 3 of 9 from the line.
In the Zip win, they were led in scoring by Amani Lyles and Tavari Johnson who had 15 each while Bowen Hardman and Shammah Scott had 12 each. It was a well rounded Zip attack which saw 8 of their players score in all.
Toledo was led by Leroy Blyder Jr with 21 while Austin Parks and Kyler Vander Jagt each scored 13. This helped Toledo build a 12-point halftime lead before Akron began to mount their rally in the second half.
Akron will find out their opponent early tomorrow evening when CBS hosts its annual selection Sunday show.
