AEW Double or Nothing took place live last from Jacksonville and did it’s best to entertain given the COVID 19 circumstances. It was clear fans were missed but the event in whole was done really well as the brass of AEW continues to show how it’s done given the current climate.
Some things were a little off, some things were good, and some things were amazing! Let’s get right to it.
The decision to put Best Friends over in the pre-show was smart. The Private Party gimmick isn’t working in AEW and Best Friends have been over for awhile now. Mix in the fact that they have been the workhorses of the tag division during quarantine and this was the smart move.
The Casino Ladder Match was great at times, and confusing at others. The finish of Brian Cage with Darby Allen came across sloppy. I also wasn’t sure why they kept ripping on Allen for completing such a dramatic ladder jump off on his skateboard seconds after entering.
They also focused a little too much on why Taz was there with Cage. From what I can tell they will have Taz be the mouthpiece of Cage ala Lesnar and Heyman.
That said however, I do like this angle a lot and can see them doing big things with it. It will be interesting to see what he does with the chip. With Cage, Luchasauraus, Wardlow, Brodie Lee and Lance Archer, there is no shortage of big men in AEW.
The concept of the match is great! It is a mix of the Royal Rumble with Money In The Bank. As long as they only do it once a year, at the most twice, it can work! I loved how they started off with SCU as the first two entrants, because that right there screams Royal Rumble and give the fans dream and Fun matchups they wouldn’t get anywhere else.
All in all I would say this concept works and I look forward very much to seeing it again. I really enjoyed the OC spots as he plays out his “slothlike” persona perfectly. It was slow at moments, but overall, really hit home.
