Avon Overcomes Sloppy Conditions and Takes the Silver Rail Trophy From Avon Lake

PLEASE HELP OUT IF YOU CAN: WE’D TRULY APPRECIATE IT

DID YOU KNOW THERE IS ONLY ONE BOOK IN THE ENTIRE WORLD ABOUT THE SILVER RAIL RIVALRY?

LITTERALLY, ONE!  DO YOU OWN IT?

Avon had one goal in mind tonight: to keep the silver rail trophy from rival Avon Lake. They did just that with a 27-0 win over the Shoremen.

It started off fast for Avon as they forced a three and out on the Shoremen’s first offensive possession of the night. After that, Dean Andress ran for 17 yards for a conversion on third down to give the eagles momentum they would never relinquish. A couple of Jariel Fenton Runs helped set up a Fenton 5-yard run for a touchdown to give the Eagles a 7-0 lead. Fenton played a lot of running back without the presence of starter Michael Colburn, who was out with an injury.

Avon lake then started their next drive with good catches from Mason Ambrose and Chris Golding, but just as the momentum was gaining, Avon’s Bryce Chura pickled off a pass from Shoremen Quarterback Michael Ambrose in Avon Lake territory. Eagles running back Dean Andress and QB Trevor Sykora then gashed the Shoremen with a lot of long runs that then set up another Fenton Touchdown run to extend the lead to 14-0.

Avon Lake then went three and out on their next possession. Avon then took the ball and had a nice drive going before many penalties held the eagles back from doing anything serious. Fenton and Sykora gave the Eagles nice runs on third and fourth down, but the distance was too much and caused the Eagles to punt.

Both teams would then have each of their next drives stall out as penalties and lost yardage on runs put both teams in bad spots to do anything offensively. Then, Avon Lake had something going with some Dawson Tenbrink to Goulding connections that gave the Shoremen something to work with.

After a Shoremen punt, a few Andress runs helped get a first down and then helped set up a Fenton 60-yard run for a touchdown to extend the lead 20-0 for the Eagles after a botched extra point.

A bad Tenbrink run then helped the eagles get a big three and out even with a big Goulding catch to give the Eagles a 20-0 lead into the half.

Avon then started the second half on a bad note with a fumble deep in their own territory before Fenton got a huge first down on the next play. The drive stalled out after a few costly penalties that halted any big plays for the Eagles offense.

Avon’s defense continued doing what it did all night and got in the Shoremen Backfield and halted any progress for Avon Lake and forced a three and out.

Andress then helped set the Eagles in motion on their next drive, but a holding and a bad drop made the offense go three and out. Avon’s defense then caused another Shoremen three and out.

Then the Eagles finally got something positive on offense with Fenton, Jackson Palmer and Ryan Pesta helping get the Eagles to get good chunk plays to give the offense some light. This then led to an Andress touchdown run from one yard out after being prevented the play before to give Avon a 27-0 lead.

Goulding and Mason Brown then helped the Shoremen get into a manageable fourth down that was converted with a sneak from Thomas Rodkey. Tenbrink got the Shoremen offense humming before a Nolan Robke sack on fourth down forced a turnover on downs for Avon Lake.

Sykora connections to Fin Jerdonik and Graydon Beerbohm then helped the Eagle running game churn the clock for the rest of the night and never gave the Shoremen another possession on offense. Runs from Luke Pavey and Camden Bly helped secure the silver Rail trophy for the Eagles and a 27-0 win.

This was Avon’s fifth consecutive win in the series and gave them a share of the SWC crown. Avon will finish their season with the Elyria Pioneers coming to town. Avon Lake will play at Berea Midpark to finish their regular season with huge playoff expectations on the line.
