Defense, Special Teams Lead Glenville to Victory Over Hoban

Akron, OH: The Glenville Tarblooders (6-2) capitalized off of five turnovers to take down Archbishop Hoban (3-4) 26-0. Junior defensive back Jaquan Gibson was a menace in the Glenville secondary, picking off two passes that included an 86-yard return for a touchdown. The Tarblooders were led offensively by John Morris, who ran for 150 yards and a 72 yard score that iced the game in the final minute. Major Cribbs went 11-26 through the air and added another 64 yards on the ground to lead the Knights.

First Half

Glenville received the opening kickoff, and moved the ball across midfield in just three plays. A big fumble lost 21 yards, and the Tarblooders were forced to punt. Luckily for Glenville, the ball bounced off a Hoban player and the Tarblooders recovered at the Knights’ 15-yard line. Three plays later, LaMarques Greenwood took the quarterback keeper one-yard up the middle for a touchdown, giving Glenville an early 7-0 lead.

On the ensuing kickoff, the Hoban return team thought the ball was going to roll out of bounds but the Tarblooders pounced on the live ball, setting their offense up at the Hoban 20. Luckily for the Knights, a field goal attempt was missed to keep it a one-score game.

Hoban responded with a long drive, working the ball down inside the red zone. Jeremy Hammel’s 35-yard field goal attempt was no good, keeping it 7-0 Glenville. After forcing a Glenville punt, Hoban was forced to punt themselves. It appeared as if Glenville took the punt back for a touchdown, but an illegal block wiped out the play.

Later in the drive, LaMarques Greenwood struck again, this time a 29-yard rushing touchdown that put the Tarblooders up 13-0 after a missed extra point.

Hoban responded by working the ball deep into Glenville territory. On first and ten from the 24, Jaquan Gibson picked off Major Cribbs and rumbled 86 yards for a touchdown. This time the Tarblooders went for two but they were unsuccessful, giving Glenville a 19-0 lead.

The Knights ran the final four minutes off of the first half game clock, and came away empty handed when a 45-yard field goal was no good. Heading into the half, Glenville led 19-0.

Second Half

Hoban received the second half kickoff and once again worked the ball inside Glenville territory, but once again came away empty handed. The Knights defense forced a punt on the ensuing Tarblooders’ possession, setting up their offense near midfield. On the first play Gibson picked off Cribbs again, his second of the game that put the momentum squarely in Glenville’s favor.

The Tarblooders responded with a drive that ran about six minutes off the game clock, leaving the Knights’ offense glued to the sideline. Glenville attempted a 32-yard field goal that was muffed by the holder, giving Hoban the ball on their own 15 with 9:46 remaining.

The next two possessions by each side went off without much excitement, as both sides traded punts. Following a blocked punt, the Hoban offense got their best field position of the game at the Glenville 38. The Knights’ worked the ball down to the 20 but the drive stopped there, as Cribbs was picked off in the end zone by Jaylen Edwards.

It appeared as if the Tarblooders would run the remaining 2:35 off the clock, but John Morris broke free for a 72-yard touchdown. This time the extra point sailed through the uprights, keeping Glenville in front 26-0.

Hoban would only run one more offensive play as the final seconds ticked away, sealing a 26-0 shutout for the Tarblooders.
