Unfortunately, that is the reality for more than 22 women. Alleged “NFL player” Daejon Love successfully swindled $1.3 million from his victims.
Love and his partner, Taylor Chan, were taken into custody Aug. 24 after being arrested at the Boise Airport in Idaho. Both face charges of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and wire fraud. Before capturing the self proclaimed “49ers player,” Love decided to make his fantasy a “reality.”
Creating the perfect illusion, one would assume they were watching another installment of the “Ocean’s” film series. Picking the perfect prey was the exact motivation Love needed to proceed with the scheme. Women seeking the lifestyle that comes with dating or marrying a professional athlete, believing their prayers were finally answered. “Bag and tag” was the name of the game for these women, until the “multimillionaire athlete” pulled a better stunt.
Love, never short on lies, maintained the illusion. From filming himself signing “contracts” to driving through cities across Portland, California, Washington and Idaho in a McLaren or running practice drills on a public beach—the plot was set and money was being made.
As his social media presence grew, online commentators weighed in on the situation. The attention eventually caught the eye of several celebrities, including rapper Cam’ron.
Speaking on the scam during his show “It Is What It Is,” Cam’ron said, “He did nothing wrong and should be free, women pull these kinds of scams everyday and don’t go to jail.”
As the conversation gained traction on social media, several women came forward explaining how Love had messaged them. Many noted they were intrigued, but ultimately never fell for his game.
With many aligning with Cam’ron’s perspective, the public conversation began to shift, posing a new recurring question: If the women were simply bamboozled and not physically harmed, why should he be arrested and convicted?
