by Lakewood, Ohio – The Lakewood Rangers built an early lead and, after a second-half push from the Buckeye Bucks, came away with a 28-21 win Friday night.
Lakewood got on the scoreboard first in the opening quarter after putting together a productive offensive drive. Quarterback Otto Wilhelmy led the Rangers downfield, while WR Nick Thomas and TE Riley Verderber each recorded catches. WR Lukas Stoll found the end zone on a rushing touchdown to give Lakewood an early advantage.
Buckeye struggled to get much going offensively in the first quarter. Quarterback Chase Geyer led the Bucks’ offense, with WR Nick Prouza recording a reception. Lakewood finished the quarter with a 6-0 lead.
The Rangers then added to their lead in the second quarter. Wilhelmy continued to make plays at quarterback, throwing a pair of touchdown passes during the quarter. Nick Thomas and Riley Verderber each came down with touchdown receptions, while WR Tyrese Gatling recorded two catches.
Buckeye managed to put together some offense, with Nick Prouza adding another reception, but the Bucks were unable to find the end zone before halftime.
Lakewood took a 20-0 lead into the locker room, but the Bucks must’ve had a good talk during halftime.
The Bucks’ rushing offense looked unstoppable in the third quarter. RB Denis Shevchenko recorded a rushing touchdown, while RB Liam Phillips recorded two. The three touchdowns helped Buckeye cut into the Lakewood lead and make things interesting heading into the fourth quarter.
The Rangers responded with another big offensive quarter of their own. Wilhelmy connected on another touchdown pass, while Tyrese Gatling came up with the big touchdown reception. The play covered 76 yards and helped the Rangers regain some momentum.
After three quarters, Lakewood held a 28-1 advantage over Buckeye. The fourth quarter was a defensive battle, with neither team able to add to their score.
Buckeye continued to move the ball, with Geyer leading the offense and Prouza and WR Mason Dolata each recording a catch. The Bucks had opportunities to get closer, but Lakewood’s defense kept them out of the end zone.
A bad snap also caused an issue for the Bucks in the 4th quarter, but the Rangers were able to keep the Bucks from completing the comeback.
After trailing 20-0 at halftime, the Bucks battled back in the second half and brought the game within one score. However, Lakewood’s defense held strong in the final quarter to secure the 28-21 win.
