by Wadsworth, OH: The Wadsworth Grizzlies (4-0) kicked off their Suburban League schedule with a 42-8 win over Solon (2-2). Junior QB Brysen Hall had himself a ball game, throwing for 291 yards and four touchdowns in just three quarters of play. WR Jay’len King continued his hot start, hauling in five catches for 89 yards and two touchdowns, bringing his season total to six. Brody Cowan led the way offensively for the Comets, throwing for 160 yards and a touchdown.
First Half
The Grizzlies received the opening kickoff and the offense got right to work, crossing midfield in four plays. Following a big third conversion, Jude Haller plowed in from two yards out for the first score of the game. After the extra point sailed through the uprights, Wadsworth held an early 7-0 lead.
Solon picked up a first down on their opening possession but could not get any further, forcing them into a punt. This time the Grizzlies would strike fast, as Brysen Hall connected with Jay’len King down the right sideline for a 48-yard Wadsworth touchdown. The extra point made it 14-0 Grizzlies late in the first quarter.
The Comets would pick up another first down on their next drive, but disaster struck. Brody Cowan completed a pass to Brady Bush but the ball came loose, recovered by the Grizzlies at the Solon 30-yard line. Hall threw an incompletion on the first play, but connected on the second with Noah Nixon who raced to the end zone for a 30-yard touchdown, putting Wadsworth up 21-0.
Unfortunately for the Comets, they could not get anything going offensively for much of the first half, being forced to punt on their next two possessions. With just under seven minutes remaining in the half, Brysen Hall went deep again, this time a 55-yard completion to Braydan Todd for a touchdown, extending their lead to 28-0.
Solon would get their last shot of the first half with three minutes remaining, starting at their own 28. Cowan completed a pass to Evan Gabor for 37 yards on the first play. With less than 20 seconds on the clock, Cowan connected with Torey Allen for an 11-yard touchdown. After a successful two-point conversion, the Comets trailed 28-8 at the half.
Second Half
Solon came into the half looking to sustain momentum following their half-ending drive that resulted in a touchdown. On third down, Cowan was picked off by Crew Eddy, who returned the ball to the 5-yard line. Wadsworth handed the ball to Jude Haller twice, the second one resulting in a three-yard touchdown, extending the lead to 35-8.
After forcing the Comets into a three-and-out on the next possession, Wadsworth began their next drive near midfield. A false start penalty moved the ball across the 50, and a completion to Kolbey Ostervich picked up three. Hall then completed a 37-yard pass to Donny Bettis that moved the ball inside the red zone. On the next play, Hall connected with King again, this time for a 16-yard touchdown. The extra point made it 42-8 Wadsworth and started the running clock.
With the backups in for the Grizzlies, Solon was able to move the ball into Wadsworth territory before failing to convert on fourth down. The Comets would get one more chance with the ball near the eight minute mark, but were forced into a punt.
After the final seconds ticked off of the clock, Wadsworth walked away with a dominant 42-8 victory.
Next Week
Wadsworth will hit the road for the fourth time in five weeks next Friday night when they travel to North Royalton (3-0). The Bears will make the trip to Hudson to square off with the Explorers (3-0) tomorrow night.
Solon will look to get above the .500 mark next week when they travel to Stow (2-1). The Bulldogs travel to Medina to take on the Bees (0-3) tomorrow night.
