Amherst Comets Roll to Opening Week Win over Sandusky

Amherst rolled into Sandusky to lift the lid on the season with an impressive 42-16 victory.  They led from start to finish to being the year on a commanding positive note.  They did most of their domination with the run game, scoring 5 times from the ground game along with a spectacular defensive score late in the game to finish it off when Dylan Popovich recovered a Sandusky fumble in the endzone.

Amherst got it going only a few minutes in when Anthony Passerrello scored on a 5-yard run with 8:06 left in the opening quarter.  After Sandusky tied it, Passerrello scored again in the closing moments of the first quarter, this time from 10 yards out to send the game to the second with the Comets up 14-7.

The Comets tacked on another rushing touchdown before half when Ethan Layne crossed the goaline from six yards out to hand the Comets a 21-13 lead at the break.  Layne was far from finished as he torched the Sandusky defense late in the third, from 24 yards out to increase the lead to 28-16.

Layne still wasn’t done as he put it away for good 3 minutes into the fourth quarter when he scored again, this time from 4 yards out to end all doubt.  As mentioned earlier, a fumble recovery in the final moments capped the scoring.

Next week, the Comets host CWC power Buckeye as they being the home portion of their schedule.
