Uniontown, OH: The Lake Blue Streaks (1-0) ran out to a 14-0 lead at the half, and converted a fourth down late in the fourth quarter to take down the North Ridgeville Rangers (0-1) 20-7. For the Rangers, quarterback Braden Harrison went 18-28 for 169 yards and a touchdown.
First Half
Lake received the opening kickoff and quickly moved into Rangers’ territory, aided by a facemask call that moved the ball across midfield. They would get it all the way down to the 24, but Ty DeGeorge threw an interception to halt the drive. North Ridgeville answered with a big drive of their own, but ran out of steam at the 35 and turned it over on downs.
With about three minutes remaining in the first, Lake took over. On the first play, Wyatt Jones hooked up with Cole Lanterman for a 22-yard completion. DeGeorge then carried the ball six of the next eight plays for Lake, putting an exclamation point on the drive with a one-yard touchdown plunge. After the extra point sailed through the uprights, Lake held a 7-0 lead with just over 11 minutes remaining in the half.
North Ridgeville responded with another long drive of their own, running ten plays and getting the ball down to the Blue Streaks’ 22. Unfortunately for the Rangers, the drive stalled out again and they turned it over on downs.
Lake stayed hot on the ensuing possession running 12 plays and bleeding over six minutes off the game clock. One play after DeGeorge converted a crucial fourth down conversion, Wyatt Jones found a wide-open Josh Lippe for a 13-yard touchdown. After the finals five seconds came off the clock, the Blue Streaks took a 14-0 lead into the halftime break.
Second Half
Neither side found much success on their opening drives of the second half, as both ended in punts. Starting their second drive on their own 20, the Rangers started to find success. Facing a 3rd & 16 from their own 34, Harrison connection with Mason Allison for a massive 59-yard gain. On fourth and goal, the two connected again, this time for a three yard score that made it 14-7 Lake late in the third.
The Blue Streaks responded right away with a big drive of their own, highlighted by a 32-yard scamper from Wyatt Jones. A big third down conversion from Jones to Lanterman picked up 20 yards and moved the ball inside the ten. On the very next play, DeGeorge took the handoff eight yards for a touchdown, increasing Lake’s lead to 20-7 early in the fourth.
Needing a touchdown to stay in the game, North Ridgeville responded with an impressive drive, including a huge 46-yard completion from Harrison to Cole Allison that moved the ball into the redzone. Three plays later, Matthew Flesher scored from five yards out, drawing the Rangers closer at 20-14 with time running out.
Lake was successful in running down the clock, but faced a fourth and one with a minute and a half remaining. Then, Ty DeGeorge showed why he is among the best in Stark County, picking up 15 yards and sealing a 20-14 opening night victory for the Blue Streaks.
