COLUMBUS, OH – As the Columbus Aviators look for their first win of the season this Sunday at Dallas against the Renegades, they know the task will not be easy. Dallas comes in at 2-0 and averaging a league best 33.5 points per game while Columbus has been giving up a league high 33.5 points per game. Kind of ironic really, but that doesn’t mean it has been all bad for the Aviators as the former Michigan Panther now Columbus Aviator Ron Stone Jr. has been one of the best pass rushers in the game.
Through two weeks, Stone has 3 sacks and a bevy of QB pressures to lead the defense. We caught up with Stone this past week via conference call who had quite a bit to share regarding the plan to stop Dallas and the emotion of playing at home last weekend.
Stone touched on what has happened thus far and the plan for Dallas, “It needs to be less about them and more about us, we’ve taken these last two weeks and really evaluated everything we’ve been doing. It’s not where we want it to be so it is more focusing on what we can do to be successful with our eleven. A lot of times when teams are averaging big plays, that is really do to just one or two people being in the wrong position at the wrong time for the offense to take advantage and make a play. If we can limit that, we can be successful.”
As mentioned, Stone has been off to a hot start, he touches on that here as well, “It is attributed to being in the right position and where I’m supposed to be lined up to capitalize when the opportunity arises. I took pride in knowing I was going to be in a slightly elevated spot this year and take advantage of the reps that come my way.”
Even in the rainy loss, the Columbus crowd was electric on Friday night and Stone and his teammates noticed it, “It was fantastic to see that many people come out and I’m really excited for them to come back out when we play at home next. It is a step up from where we were last year as the UFL has done a great job of relocating teams and we will give the fans something fun to watch! “
The Aviators will have their first chance at a win this Sunday when they travel to Dallas. A game that can be seen on the FOX Networks at 12pm.
