Usually known for video games, Nintendo has recently tried something different: movies. Nintendo hit the jackpot with the first Mario movie being a major success, but this release could be even bigger. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie was a big hit this week with my family!
Super Mario Galaxy is a fan favorite video game in the Mario franchise. Fans love the iconic soundtrack, new level scenery, and overall storyline. Before this game, fans were used to the Mushroom Kingdom, but this game took them to a universe far beyond that. The soundtrack of this movie was right on point and matches the game perfectly.
This game also introduced one of the most iconic Nintendo characters, Rosalina. Her character added so much emotional depth to the game, with many mysteries that fans still want to know. Fans will go to the theaters just to see her on the big screen alone. This reveal along with the good vs evil with Bowser and Bowser Jr was on point as well. They nailed it!
Christ Pratt is returning as Mario, and Jack Black is returning as Bowser. New additions to the cast include Brie Larson voicing Rosalina and Donald Glover voicing Yoshi.
The timing for this movie also plays a crucial role. There are two Super Mario Galaxy video games. Fans have been begging for a third game to be released for a while now. Nintendo noticed this and knew what bringing Super Mario Galaxy back could potentially do. They took a gamble and decided to make a movie instead of a third video game.
The marketing for this movie has also been out of this world. There have been many different trailers released, merchandise everywhere you look, and character posters seen at different places. A stained-glass Princess Peach mural was seen inside a building in NYC earlier this month. McDonald’s is also supposed to be giving out Super Mario Galaxy toys in their Happy Meals the week of the movie release.
What sets The Super Mario Galaxy Movie apart is its potential to build on something that was already successful in a different and creative way. Combining a game that is said to be one of the best Mario games ever with the sequel to a movie that already had major success could make the movie an all-time great. If Nintendo’s gamble pays off, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie could become Nintendo’s biggest hit ever.
