The Columbus Blue Jackets shut out the New Jersey Devils on Tuesday, February 3, and then didn’t give up an inch to the Chicago Blackhawks at home the next night on February 4. This now marks seven straight wins for the Blue Jackets and keeps them in the third-place wild card spot and fourth in the Metropolitan Division. Columbus is looking to keep the momentum going after the Winter Olympic break to secure a spot in the playoffs.
Tuesday, February 3
The first two frames on Tuesday night went without a mark on the board for either team. Mason Marchment served a two-minute penalty at 18:25 in the first period for tripping. Miles Wood served a two-minute penalty at 9:10 in the second period for goalkeeper interference, and Columbus was awarded a power-play at 17:55 for a holding call against the Devils.
Columbus kicked off the final frame with a two-minute hooking penalty against Zach Werenski at 1:09, soon followed by a tripping call on the Devils at 2:00. Dante Fabbro added the first tally to the board on Tuesday night when he scored an unassisted goal at 5:24. Mathieu Olivier kept Columbus ahead when he scored a backhand shot at 12:05 with help from Cole Sillinger and Boone Jenner. The final goal of the night was scored by Mathieu Olivier at 16:00 and was assisted by Charlie Coyle and Zach Werenski, to secure a 3-0 shutout for Columbus. Both the Blue Jackets and the Devils served two-minute penalties at 16:19 for interference and roughing before wrapping up the evening.
Elvis Merzlikins was in goal for the Jackets on Tuesday night and saved all 24 shots on goal.
Wednesday, February 4
Columbus wasted no time on Wednesday night, kicking off the game with a snapshot goal from Zach Werenski at 4:46 in the first period with help from Cole Sillinger and Charlie Coyle. Ivan Provorov was able to add another mark to the Jackets’ score when he secured a wrist shot goal at 12:50, assisted by Adam Fantilli and Mason Marchment.
The Blue Jackets piled penalties in the middle frame, starting with a two-minute hooking call on Danton Heinen at 2:55. Columbus did not lose their momentum and secured their third goal of the night at 5:17 when Danton Heinen scored a wrist shot with an assist from Charlie Coyle. The Jackets served two more two-minute penalties against Sean Monahan for slashing at 8:42 and Damon Severson for tripping at 15:09.
Columbus started the final period with a two-minute roughing penalty against Dante Fabbro at 6:01, while Chicago also served a slashing penalty at the same time. The Blackhawks served another two-minute penalty for tripping Zach Werenski at 11:27. Columbus wrapped up the night when Sean Monahan scored an unassisted wrist shot at 15:33 to shut out the Blackhawks 4-0.
Jet Greaves was in goal for Columbus on Wednesday night and saved all 21 shots on goal.
