Magnificat Blue Streaks Nip River Pirates in Cross the Street Rivalry

The Blue Streaks held court tonight with a 56-43 victory over their cross the street rivals, the River Pirates.

The first quarter began as Magnificat won the tip off and drove the ball down court. The Pirates defense stayed strong, which led to a basket from Elizabeth Lang. Seemingly upset at an early Pirate lead, the Blue Streaks’ Gemma Wichmann scored three points, followed by a 3 point basket from Lizzie Godlewski to jump ahead 6-2. The Pirates offense ramped up as Claudia Roche and Elizabeth Lang both made baskets, and their defense stood extremely strong against the Blue Streaks. It wasn’t invincible, though, as Gemma Wichmann closed the quarter with a 3 point shot. The quarter’s final score was 9-6, Magnificat.

The second quarter began with a bang as Isabella Wilson scored a 3 pointer for the Blue Streaks. Both teams defensive games were strong, but Rocky River’s Nora Bruder and Elizabeth Lang both managed to score before Lizzie Godlewski made a basket for Magnificat. The rest of the half consisted of aggressive offense from both teams as Nora Bruder, Maia Petrulis, Elizabeth Lang, and Olivia Dewey scored for the Pirates, and Gemma Wichmann, Lizzie Godlewski, Lilly Kuhlman, and Eva Rivera scored for Magnificat. The half ended with a score of 30-19, Blue Streaks.

The second half began with a strong offensive performance from the Pirates as Olivia Dewey scored a 3 pointer, but Magnificat quickly turned the half around as Gemma Wichmann scored back to back 3 pointers as well. Elizabeth Lang and Nora Bruder both made baskets for Rocky River before the Blue Streaks took back control with another basket from Gemma Wichmann and one from Elise LaPorte. The Pirates’ Angelina Swallow then scored two points, just before Gemma Wichmann and Elise LaPorte once again scored back to back for Magnificat. Rocky River ended the quarter strong with baskets from Nora Bruder and Elizabeth lang, with a final third quarter score of 45-35, Magnificat.

The fourth quarter was heavy in defensive gameplay and very low in baskets. Elizabeth Lang started it off with two points for the Pirates, followed by a three pointer from Magnificat’s Elle Lakios. The rest of the game consisted of a Pirate basket from Angelina Swallow, one from Maia Petrulis, and one from Nora Bruder, and baskets from Gemma Wichmann and Elise LaPorte for the Blue Streaks. The game ended in a Magnificat victory with a score of 56-43.

The top five Pirate scorers were Elizabeth Lang, Nora Bruder, Olivia Dewey, Maia Petrulis, and Angelina Swallow. The top five Blue Streaks scorers were Gemma Wichmann, Lizzie Godlewski, Elise LaPorte, Isabella Wilson, and Eva Rivera.

  1. Two great programs year in and year out, built on values. Refreshing to see parents who make it about their kids and not AAU political bullshit. It can be SMAC, MAC or my ass crack, it simply doesn’t matter, these girls and programs are doing things the right way!
