River Defeats Normandy in CWC Clash

On January 10th, 2026, the Rocky River Pirates girls basketball team faced the Normandy Invaders, resulting in a Pirate victory 65-51.

The first quarter began as the Pirates won the tipoff and drove the ball down court, leading to a basket from Elizabeth Lang. Both teams were playing aggressive offense, but the Pirates’ prevailed and Claudia Roche was able to score. Normandy’s Sofia Syzmczak then attacked the Pirates basket scoring 3 points. Rocky River came back with strong offense as Elizabeth Lang and Nora Bruder scored back to back.

As Normandy took hold of the ball, the Pirates held a strong defensive wall. Eventually, Lindsay Meriwether fought through and scored 3 points, followed by a basket for Rocky River from Maia Petrulis. The Pirates’ defense continued to hold strong, blocking the Invaders from scoring many points, allowing Rocky River’s Claudia Roche to score 3 points and a basket from Elizabeth Lang. Finally, Normandy’s Ziley Minich scored 3 points to close the quarter with a score of 15-9, Rocky River.

The Pirates started off the second quarter with possession of the ball, but their offense seemed to be lacking in comparison to the previous quarter. Due to this, Normandy’s Lindsay Meriwether and Sofia Syzmczak both made baskets. The Invaders’ back to back baskets seemed to ignite something in the Pirates, however, as they went on a scoring rampage. It began with 2 points from Elizabeth Lang, then 3 points from Nora Bruder. Claudia Roche then made back to back baskets, as well as a free throw, and Elizabeth Lang scored 2 more points. It wasn’t just the Pirates’ offense that was shining, but also their defense.

A long standoff at Rocky River’s basket ensued, and despite impressive offensive plays from the Invaders, the Pirates prevailed and blocked any and all shots. Elizabeth Lang and Angelina Swallow then both scored 2 points for Rocky River. Normandy’s Lindsay Meriwether was eventually able to break through the Pirates’ defensive wall and make a basket, followed by 2 points from Rocky River’s Reagan Kane, and a 3 pointer from the Invaders’ Giana Carciopollo to close the half with a score of 33-19, Pirates.

The second half started off with a bang as Giana Carciopollo scored 3 points for Normandy. Claudia Roche and Nora Bruder then each scored 2 points for Rocky River. Both teams went on to score several baskets within this quarter, with majority being attributed to Normandy’s Giana Carciopollo, Allison Pollock, Ziley Minich, Chaizley Minich, and Keilei Anderson. For the Pirates, most points came from Elizabeth Lang, Claudia Roche, Nora Bruder, Maia Petrulis, and Olivia Dewey. The two teams each displayed incredible offense and put their hearts into the game, ending the quarter with a score of 53-41, Rocky River.

The final quarter was nothing short of entertaining as Giana Carciopollo started it off with 3 points for Normandy. Despite the Invaders strong defense, Elizabeth Lang was able to score a 3 pointer for Rocky River as well. Both teams game play seemed to stay consistent with that of the previous half as Normandy’s Lindsay Meriwether made a basket, but after realizing that the Invaders were getting closer and closer to tying the game, the Pirates seemed to have a newfound fire. Angelina Swallow, Nora Bruder, and Olivia Dewey all scored back to back baskets with impeccable ball movement. Not only was their offensive game strong, but their defense as well; especially from Olivia Dewey.

Eventually the Invaders broke through Rocky River’s defense as Ziley Minich impressively scored back to back. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to beat the Pirates, and the game closed with two baskets from Nora Bruder and one from Elizabeth Lang. The game ended with a score of 65-51, Pirates.

The top five scorers for the Normandy Invaders were Sofia Syzmczak, Lindsay Meriwether, Ziley Minich, Giana Carciopollo, and Allison Pollock.

The Rocky River Pirates’ top five scorers were Nora Bruder, Elizabeth Lang, Claudia Roche, Maia Petrulis, and Olivia Dewey.
