NORTH RIDGEVILLE, OH – The Rangers used pressure defense along with a nasty box and one to hold Normandy to only 4 points in the first quarter and 16 in the first half on their way to a 57-43 home victory over the Invaders.
The Rangers were led in scoring by Mary Strippy with 13 while Brooke Schroeder had 12 and Lauryn Bohanan had 11. Also scoring in double digits was Maddie Kuhn with 5 while Adri Spyres had 9. Sara Slack closed out the Ranger scoring with 2. Down a starter in Reyna Balderas, the Rangers showed serious heart with 4 players reaching double digits.
The Normandy Invaders were led by Keilei Anderson with 15 while Lindsay Meriweather had 12.
It was a slow first six minutes as both teams were knotted up at 4. It was until a Schroeder three with 48 seconds to go broke the tie and loosened the nets. The Rangers took a 9-4 lead into the second.
The Second quarter began with a 7-2 Ranger run highlighted by a Maddie Kuhn three to extend their lead to 16-6. The run was stopped by an Anderson three ball to synch it back up to 16-9. The three was made possible by a beautiful drive and kick from Minnich who countless times in the quarter found open teammates with pitcher perfect passing. Minnich has amazing vision and when the opponent collapses she can react. The Rangers went on to take a 27-16 lead into the break.
The Rangers began the second half on a 8-4 run on the strength of a pressure defense forcing Normandy into mistakes. This was eventually halted by a Pollock three ball as Minnich continued to find the open Invader. This led to a 7-0 run which brought the game to 35-27 before Ridgeville finished the quarter ahead 40-30.
The first four minutes of the fourth quarter were slow with Schroeder and Anderson exchanging threes at one point, but four minutes in it was 44-35. A brief Invader push sparked by a clutch three pointer from Faith Mathis gave them life, only down 7 with 2:38 to play. It was fleeting however as the Rangers rebounded, remained calm and walked away with the 57-43 win, thanks in part to a 10-3 run to close it out.
The Invaders will look to bounce back this Wednesday night as they travel to Rocky River while the Rangers look to stay hot as they host Elyria on Wednesday as well.
