Tim Alexander Memorial: Pirates Sink Shoremen 9-1

For Rocky River, it was the names you know and love, Stueber, Mallett, Asmar and Dempsey leading the Pirates over the Shoremen 9-1.

For Avon Lake, they were shorthanded but still fought hard as coach Steve Burns wouldn’t expect anything less. In the end however, it was all Pirates.

This was game 2 of 6 on Saturday of the Tim Alexander Memorial Tournament from Rocky River. The Pirates move to 2-0 while the Shoremen drop to 0-2 on the weekend. Up next for River, they will play Avon at 7:15 in the night cap.

The Shoremen will have a quicker turnaround, playing at 3:45 against a tough Mentor team that won earlier today, 8-3 over Olmsted Falls.

Rocky River got it going a few minutes into the first when Luke Mallet found the back of the net. About 7 minutes later it was Matthew Stueber lighting the lamp to make it 2-0. Stueber seems on track to live up to the outstanding Stueber name in River hockey lore.

Then with only a few seconds left it was James Byall scoring on an outstanding pass from Luke Mallett and Aiden Dempsey to make it 3-0 after one period. That goal came with only 3 second left on the clock, and more impressively only 7 seconds into a power play.

In the second, the Shoremen did everything they could to keep it close, but simply couldn’t overcome the barrage of River shots. It was River with goals from Ethan Routenberg, Aiden Dempsey and Reese Rochester to build the league to a commanding 6-0.

Avon Lake as they are known to do under Burns, fought back and refused to quit despite the barrage of goals. It was Justin Share blasting a slapshot worthy of The Mighty Ducks Fulton Reed to scorch the net and cut the lead to 6-1.

Rocky River was not impressed however and wasted no time answering the goal with another one of their own. The Danny Asmar one timer from Stueber made it 7-1 at the close of two periods. They would tack on two more in the third and skate away with the win.
