AMHERST, Ohio – It was the Avon Eagles soaring high in the night sky of Amherst, defeating the Amherst Comets 34-0.
First Half:
On Avon’s first drive, the Eagles put the ball in the hands of senior quarterback Blake Elder, who threw for a perfect five-for-five on the drive, finding wide receivers Finn Jerdonek, Jordan Carter, and Grant Barr. On his fifth and final pass, he found Barr from 7 yards out in the endzone to give the Eagles an early 7-0 lead.
A few possessions later, following a 54-yard punt return from Finn Jerdonek, Avon ran the ball three times, capping off the drive with a three-yard touchdown run from wide receiver Cody Canning to extend the Avon lead to 14-0.
On the next two Avon drives, senior kicker Jensen Petro showed off his powerful leg, converting on a pair of field goals from 45 and 35 yards to extend the Avon lead to 20-0 with time still left in the second quarter.
With just under two minutes left in the first half, Avon got the ball yet again as Avon Quarterback Blake Elder went to work in the two-minute drill, completing five of six passes. He found his favorite target, Grant Barr, three times for 35 yards, including a five-yard touchdown pass to extend the Eagles’ lead to 27-0, the lead the Eagles took into halftime.
Second Half:
Following a booming punt by Amherst punter Cy Christensen, Avon started their final scoring drive of the game from their own 25-yard line. Wide receiver Jordan Carter lined up at running back and ran for 11 yards on three carries. On the next play, Elder threw his longest pass of the night, a 54-yard strike to wide receiver Jakob Weatherspoon. Following another run from Carter, Elder found wide receiver Finn Jerdonek from six yards out in the endzone to extend the Avon lead to 34-0, which was the final score.
In the win, Avon improves to 7-1 on the season and remains perfect at 5-0 in the Southwestern Conference. The Eagles head home to play their rival, the Avon Lake Shoremen, next week.
The Amherst Comets drop to 2-3 in the Southwestern Conference and 4-4 overall. The Comets head to North Ridgeville next week for a huge game against the North Ridgeville Rangers.
