Avon Lake Shoregals Defeat Berea-Midpark Titans in SWC Clash

A well rounded attack led the Avon Lake Shoregals to a 58-45 victory today over the visiting Berea-Midpark Titans.  The Shoregals were led by Bre Jones with 21 and Olivia Miller with 10, while Alyssa Jones and Izzie Polinko each had 8.  Rounding out the scoring for the Shoregals was Olivia Tobin with 7 and Molly Milligan with 6.

For the Titans, they were led in scoring by their two captains, Regan Braaten with 22 and Rylee Szojka with 8 while Casey Friel knocked in 11.  Emma Arnold and Avery James each had 2 to round out the scoring for the Titans.

A Casey Friel layup inside cut the Shoregals lead to 9-8 midway through the first quarter. After a few more buckets from the Shoregals extended their lead to 15 – 10.  A three from nearly 30 feet went in from Braaten who sunk it with confidence, cutting the lead to 15-13 with 2 minutes to play in the first quarter. The Shoregals went on to hold a 19-13 lead after a very competitive first 8 minutes.

The Shoregals started the second quarter on a 5-0 run with buckets by Bre and Alyssa Jones. Two made foul shots by Rylee Szojka stopped the run for the Titans before Molly Milligan bodied up for two more in the paint for the Shoregals.  Bre Jones stayed hot on the next trip down the court by nailing a three ball, and just like that it was Shoregals up big at 29-15, their biggest lead of the game with a little over 4 minutes to play in the first half. The Shoregals ran their lead out to 34-18.

Try as they might, the Titans couldn’t cut into the lead in the third, as the Shoregals seemed to have an answer for every bucket as Avon Lake led 46-30 after three, as the two teams split the quarter 12-12.

Two three balls by Casey Friel and a runner by Braaten gave the Titans new life to open up the fourth quarter, cutting the lead to 50-38 a minute into the action. Izzie Polinko put a stop to that with a nice one-handed move, to build the league back up to 52-38.  Moments later a Tobin three ball put it away for good for the Shoregals.  Avon Lake went on to win 58-45.
