CLEVELAND, OH – After a disappointing Cleveland Browns loss today at home against the pitiful New York Giants, 21-15, the Cleveland front office needs to start asking themselves a serious question, who should be calling the plays? Sure, Deshaun Watson finished with a decent stat line of 21 of 37 for 196 yards and 2 touchdowns. He still hasn’t had a 200 yard game this season, or a 300 yard game as a Brown. It is clear, he simply doesn’t fit in Stefanski’s system.
So, why not adjust to what you have? The Browns need to realize as long as Kevin Stefanski is calling the plays while Watson is behind center, it is not going to work. Watson is not good in his system, Flacco was and Flacco is gone.
Think about it for a second, the Browns had no offensive line today, Watson was under pressure all game and sacked 8 times. Why not call for 3 step drops, or roll outs, or screen passes to Ford and use his speed? This dropping back in the pocket nonsense is going to get Watson killed and he is clearly not good enough to handle pressure.
Take a look at the drive the Browns had to open the fourth quarter when they went 49 yards in 5 plays. They did it in short and quick chunk plays, and it worked! Ford had 3 catches today for 33 yards, and it could have easily been 10 catches for 200 yards had they gone to him as the outlet far more times. This drop back and try to sling it down the field attack doesn’t work with Watson. He doesn’t have the arm Flacco did, or the accuracy. The drops don’t help either, but something needs to change.
