Kent, Ohio – Seth Wyckoff hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Dalton a 3-2 win in Game #2 of the Cancer Awareness Classic at Schoonover Stadium.
The teams started ten minutes early in an attempt to get ahead of impending weather. Both pitched a scoreless inning each, and there was one out in the top of the second before the skies opened up.
The downpour led to a delay of 25 minutes before action resumed.
Tanner Buso led off the top of the third inning with a single, and advanced to second due to a sacrifice bunt. Chad Westfall broke the shutout with a two-out single to right field to score Buso and put Mogadore ahead, 1-0.
Wildcat starting pitcher Austin Constantine pitched a gem of a game, with six strikeouts through five innings of work, keeping the Dalton hitters off balance.
Mogadore looked to add to their lead in the top of the fifth.
Devin Graham led off with a single up the middle, and then stole second. A check swing by Tanner Buso advanced Graham to third. However, Brady Hignight had an outfield assist on a flyball to throw Buso out at home, keeping the score 2-0.
After a 1-2-3 inning, in which Austin Constantine induced three straight flyouts, Mogadore got to work in the top of the sixth.
Chad Westfall led off with a walk. He advanced to second due to a sac bunt, and to third due to a weak groundout. Ohio University football commit Mason Williams brough him home with a two-out RBI single to left field. This increased the Wildcat lead to 2-0.
Austin Constantine had a no-hitter going through five innings. He retired the first two batters of the bottom of the sixth with ease. Bryce Johnson got Dalton’s first hit of the game with a single up the middle.
Jack Steiner followed with a single of his own to put runners at first and second. Junior catcher Talan Greegor responded with a two-run double to left field to tie the score at 2.
Mogadore looked to take the lead after two quick outs.
Tanner Buso was hit by a pitch. Will Baskey followed with a single to put runners at first and second. Bryce Johnson came on in relief for Dalton and got Chad Westfall to flyout to right to end the inning.
Will Carmichael led off the bottom of the seventh with a double to left field for Dalton. Pinch-runner Kade Miller stole third to put the winning run 90 feet away.
After a groundout to third, Seth Wyckoff came to the plate and hit a walk-off single to right field to win the game for the Dalton Bulldogs.
Dalton, now 7-6, travels to Hillsdale for WCAL conference play on Monday, April 24th. Alex Hess threw 6.2 innings and struck out five batters. He allowed just four hits and gave up two runs.
Mogadore, now 4-6, hosts Rootstown in Portage Trail Conference play on Monday, April 24th. Austin Constantine threw six innings, gave up three hits, and struck out six.
