For the first time since the mid to late 80’s, the Cleveland Browns have a legitimate chance at their head coach Kevin Stefanski being named NFL Coach of the Year. Many fans wanted Josh McDaniel, Ron Rivera or Mike McCarthy when the annual coaching search began last year. Andrew Barry and the front office took their time however, and got it right for once.
No excuses despite bad defense and injury luck
The Cleveland Browns have key players on their defensive unit out. It started when two recent defensive high round draft picks couldn’t even get on the field this season with pre-season injuries to Rookie Safety Grant Delpit and second year man Greedy Williams. Since then, Denzel Ward, their best secondary player has been knocked out from injury, and NFL Defensive MVP candidate Myles Garrett has been out the past two games with COVID 19.
OBJ had another silent start to the season before a season ending injury knocked him out for good. On top of that, NFL leading rusher Nick Chubb got knocked out for four plus games. They have had countless practices cancelled because of COVID 19 and their point differential is negative 21, the worst of any 8-win team through 11 weeks in NFL History.
They have been outscored by their divisional rivals Baltimore and Pittsburgh 76 – 13. And yet, despite all of that, first year head coach Kevin Stefanski is the leading candidate for NFL coach of the Year, and it’s not even close!
