Team of the Year
The Avon Eagles (8-2) 9-2 if you count the playoffs.
Reason –Their only out of conference loss came on the road against Medina, one of the top ranked Division 1 teams in the state. They are also the only team all year long to give Medina a game. The other loss was against their rival in which you can just throw records out the window when those two hook up. Not to mention that they controlled 3 quarters of that game.
While some may want to dwell on the two losses, I would recommend that you focus on the 8 regular season wins. They have been incredibly impressive with running clocks on programs such as Glenville, Berea-Midpark and Brunswick. They also had a gritty come from behind win over Olmsted Falls. All of those teams I just mentioned made the playoffs this year, along with Elyria whom also appeared on their schedule and the Eagles defeated.
Avon is never out of a game, and they just keep getting better each week. They are currently riding a 7 game winning streak that doesn’t look to have an ending to it anytime soon. Quarterback Sam DeTillio has been one of the best in the SWC this year as he has thrown for 1472 yards and 22 touchdowns. His backfield combination of Jakorion Caffey and Gavin Eharhdt is better than 75% if not more of D1 programs out there as well.
Is this the year Coach Mike Elder leads them to the state championship game? I sure wouldn’t bet against it as this is the best I’ve seen Avon play all year long, and they just keep bringing it. Elder remains the master of game planning and motivating.
Graham McDougle, Avon name is misspelled. It is MCDOUGLE. Thank you!
