When Annika Norris is healthy and playing at her best, Westlake can beat anyone in the GLC and they showed that tonight with 15 points and nearly double digit boards as she controlled the paint in a 45-34 win over Buckeye to advance to the second round of the GLC tournament.
The Demons were aided by 11 from Lydia Tymozczuk along with Eleanor Henton and Lauryn Stanton each having 6 points. Also scoring was Colleen Urich with 3 while Ella Stanton and Rachel Nash had 2 each in the win.
The Demons built a 10-6 early lead thanks in part to Annika Norris and the mismatch they exploited with her down low. Norris had 6 quick points by using her body in the paint, over and over again on both sides of the court. She blocked shots, stole the ball and then converted them into points. Her 6 along with 4 from Eleanor graced the Demons with the early lead. 3 foul shots by Colleen Urich helped the Demons lead 13-10 after one.
Lydia Tymoszczuk is never shy about launching the three ball, and connected on one for the Demons after the Bucks had cut the lead to 13-12. A little later after Buckeye tied it at 18, it was Tymoszczuk hitting another three to recapture the Demon lead at 21-18. A Norris bucket at the buzzer, sent the Demons to halftime with a 24-22 lead.
Lauryn Stanton began the second half with a beautiful dribble drive converted into a underhand layup to get the Demons going. Moments later, it was Stanton on a runout to increase the Demon lead to 28-22, their largest of the game. After the Bucks closed in to 28-26, a Tymoszczuk brought it back out to 31-26. Moments later the red hot quarter from Stanton continued with her 3rd bucket of the 3rd, to make it 33-26. The Demons took a 36-29 lead into the fourth quarter.
Back to back buckets from Tymoszczuk and Rachel Nash to start the fourth quarter, helped build the lead to 40-31 for Westlake. They went on to win 45-34.
