Overview:
Western Michigan is coming off of an impressive 8-5 season just a year ago. They finished fourth in the MAC West behind Toledo, Central Michigan, and NIU. There will be a lot of curiosity at the QB spot this year. rFr QB Jack Salopek is projected to fight for the starting job with former Alabama walk-on Stone Hollenbach. The QB battle will be the most interesting devlepoment for the Broncos this season. The running back room remains full with returners, Sean Tyler and La’Daruis Jefferson who will split touches this year behind a offensive line with only two returning starters. This defense has seven starters returning on what was one of the best units in the MAC last season. Expect this defense to once again be one of the top units in the MAC for the second year in a row.
Dom’s Overlook:
The Broncos have gone into the season overlooked in the west title race thanks to Toledo, Central Michigan, and NIU returning the majority of their teams. They lost to Toledo and Central Michigan last year but had a commanding victory against NIU. If WMU can figure out the QB situation quick, they could fight for the top of the West towards the end of the season. The Run game will be the strongest part of their offense as they try to ease a new QB into the system. Early in the year they play at Michigan State, at Ball State, Pittsburgh, and at San Jose St. Michigan St and Pitt are two teams that will be hard to beat this season, Pitt will come to Western Michigan with a vengeance due to the upset that happened last year at old Heinz Field.
Prediction:
Western Michigan can be a top team in the MAC, but I don’t see them passing the top three in Toledo, Central Michigan, and NIU. I don’t see them beating any of those three and losing to Miami (OH). I also don’t see them beating a strong Pitt team for the second year in a row. I see WMU at the worst winning just five games and at the best winning seven. This can be an up and down year for the Broncos due to a tough schedule.
