by College football is back! And in the sports glorious return it was an action packed week 1 that had games going all the way late into the night and early the following morning. And the MAC school that was going late into the night was Kent State who was facing off against Washington.
As many of you may remember, a few seasons ago Washington played Ohio State in the Rose Bowl, but this Washington team is a long way from that. The Huskies finished with a 4-8 record last season, and fired head coach Jimmy Lake in the middle of the season.
And last season was a good one for Kent State, finishing with a 7-7 record, including a 6-2 conference record as well as the MAC East division title. So how good of a game would we get between these two programs who were in different directions last season.
The first pass play of the game by new starting quarterback Collin Schlee, was an interception. Asa Turner picked off the junior quarterback and from there the Huskies never looked back.
Washington in their first eight possessions scored six touchdowns. It was a dominate performance by Washington’s quarterback Michael Penix Jr, who passed for 345 yards and four touchdown passes.
The two wide receiver stars of the game for the Huskies were Jalen McMillan and Rome Odunze. McMillan had five catches for 87 yards and two touchdowns. And Odunze had seven catches for 84 yards and a touchdown catch himself. It was a tough night for the Golden Flashes defense as the Huskies passing game was killing them all night.
Schlee after the first pass interception ended up settling in a little bit, he threw for 178 yards, had a touchdown, but did throw one more interception late in the game to Turner again. This pick ended up costing the Flashes a chance to score late in the game.
Although the 45-20 loss for the Golden Flashes was not the way you want to start a season there was one bright star of the game for the Flashes and that was wide receiver Dante Cephas. Cephas, who had over 1,000 yards receiving last season, continued that into the season opener. Cephas had six catches for 105 yards receiving. Whenever the Golden Flashes offense needed a spark it was Cephas who would come away with a big first down reception. Unfortunately for the flashes they needed more than just Cephas to come up big in last nights game in the 25 point loss.
Next week Kent State will be taking on the Oklahoma Sooners. After a disappointing game to start the season, Kent State will need to bring everything they have to just remain competitive against the ninth ranked team in the nation.
