Was This The Worst Survivor Series Ever?

There have been some great WWE Survivor Series over the years, and then there has been some “not so great” editions.  Perhaps none worst than the 1993 edition that went south quickly and never recovered, complete with several last second switches and storylines that fell flat.

It was almost shocking that it failed so badly when the star power of Macho Man, Bret Hart, Shawn Michaels, Lex Luger The Undertaker and Yokozuna were all heavily involved. It was also at the Boston Garden which is historically one of the very best places to hold any wrestling event past or present. But it went south quickly and never recovered.

Opening Match

123 Kid, Marty Jannetty, Razor Ramon & Macho Man vs IRS, Diesel, Atom Bomb & Rick Martel

Reason it failed – While having a couple of underdogs in the 123 Kid & Marty Jannetty winning it all, may have seemed like a good idea, but the long-term credibility of the team had no legs.  Mix in the fact that no reason was ever given for Mr. Perfect getting pulled at the very last second for Macho Man.

Neither Perfect or Ramon fit in the actual match, but giving zero reason didn’t help anything.  Macho Man didn’t have beef with anyone in the match, and it made little to no sense for him to suddenly be in it.

They tried to use this match to set up a few future angles that went nowhere.  The first being Ramon defending his IC belt against IRS at Royal Rumble which had a flat payoff considering the feud he was in centered around Shawn Michaels.  Also, Marty and the Kid making a tag title run, thus going over.

The Hart Brothers vs Shawn Michaels & The Knights

Reason it failed – While the main thing to come out of this match was the heel turn of Owen Hart, the rest of it was an epic disaster. First of all, at this point, Hart & Shawn Michaels had ZERO heat with each other.

Michaels was another last second switch as Jerry Lawler who had been working a 5-month angle with Hart at this point, was accused of rape of a minor a week ahead of the event, effectively removing him from it.

The Knights consisted of a masked Greg Valentine, Barry Horowitz and Jeff Gaylord.  No one cared about any of them, not to mention the fact no one cared to watch Keith and Bruce Hart wrestle either.  Mix in some lame jokes by Ray Combs of the Family feud to incite the crowd, and this was a gigantic failure at 31 minutes.

The Heavenly Bodies vs The Rock N Roll Express for the Smokey Mountain Tag Titles

Reason it failed – No one in the Northeast portion of the country would pay a dime to watch a SMW match let alone a hard earned PPV purchase.  What was Vince thinking?

The Four Doinks vs Bam Bam Bigelow, The Headshrinkers & Bastion Booger

Reason it failed – The entire purpose was to put Doink over as a fan favorite, and then they don’t even have him there. Instead they slap face paint on the Bushwackers and Men On A Mission. Do I need to continue or have I said enough already?

They should have had Bigelow run through all of team Doink like a hot knife through butter, but instead they had his team get swept in 10 minutes. NEXT!

Your main event of the evening

Lex Luger, The Undertaker & The Steiner Bro’s vs Yokozuna, Ludvig Borga, Crush & Jacques

Reason it failed – It didn’t.  This match was actually pretty damn good despite the late switches of The Undertaker from Tatanka and Crush from Pierre.  Both in fact, were significant upgrades.

Bottom line, skip to the main event if you ever dial this one up on the Network.

To recap, scheduled be there and didn’t show up were

Mr. Perfect

Jerry The King Lawler

Tatanka

Doink

1 out of 5 stars
