Akron, Ohio – Thanks to outstanding pitching from senior Cam Hollobaugh, and clutch hits from Gavin Shrum and Caleb Hadley, the Warren JFK Eagles held off the Fort Loramie Redskins, 3-2, in a Division IV state semifinal Saturday afternoon at Canal Park.
The teams traded zeroes for the first two innings.
In the bottom of the third, Santino Ciambotti got the Eagles’ second hit of the game with a single to left.
Alex DeSalvo was hit by a pitch, advancing Ciambotti to second.
Junior Gavin Shrum followed up with a one-out single up the middle to bring home Ciambotti. This put the Eagles up 1-0. He went 2-2 on the day, and reached base on a HBP.
Freshman Caleb Hadley delivered a two-run double down the line. Shrum and DeSalvo would score, increasing the lead to 3-0.
In the top of the fourth, Fort Loramie got on the board thanks to a Derek Meyer walk. He later came around to score on a two-out single by Mack Fortman.
After a scoreless fifth and sixth, pinch-hitter Cint Hilgefort delivered an RBI single in the seventh to cut the Redskins’ deficit to 3-2. The next batter, Derek Meyer, would groundout into a fielder’s choice to end the game.
Walsh football/baseball commit Cam Hollobaugh threw a complete game Saturday afternoon on 107 pitches. He walked two and struck out seven.
Warren JFK advances to the Division IV State Championship game Sunday afternoon at 4:00 p.m.
Junior Derek Meyer came on in relief, and threw 3 1/3 shutout innings. He allowed just one hit and struck out three. Fort Loramie’s season ends at 26-4.
