Solon, Ohio – The Walsh Jesuit Warriors held off a late Solon Comet charge to win 55-46, in the first round of the OHSAA boys basketball tournament.
Sean Spicer was a key factor in the first half, scoring 12 points, connecting on the inside and the outside. He hit an early triple to give the Warriors the lead in the first. This came after a Cameron Lumpkin jumper put Solon on top, 2-0. The Warriors held Solon to one second quarter field goal, a floater from senior Cam Brown, and led 25-17 at the half.
The third quarter featured more scoring, with Walsh Jesuit outpacing Solon, 20-17. Sean Spicer had nine points in the stanza, countering the efforts of Cam Lumpkin and Luke Kormuth (Solon), who each had seven for the Comets.
A Sean Spicer three late in the third turned out to be the last Warrior field goal of the game. His third trey had the Warrior margin at 45-34 after three quarters.
However, Solon would not go away easily. They chipped away at the Warrior lead with a 9-2 run, cutting their deficit to 47-43 with less than two minutes to play.
However, the Comets could get no closer, and Walsh Jesuit secured the game at the charity stripe. Spicer, Joe Sitarz, and Tyler Bell each sank clutch free throws, and the defense did its job as well.
Walsh Jesuit travels to take on Austintown Fitch on Saturday, March 2nd, in the Twinsburg sectional final. The Warriors were paced by senior forward Sean Spicer, who finished with 24 points. Senior guard Tyler Bell chipped in 13.
Solon finishes their season at 13-10. They were led by junior guard Cameron Lumpkin and junior forward Luke Kormuth, who each had 16.
