Davenport Assumptions Knights defeated the Wahlert Golden Eagles tonight 30-6. The last time these teams faced each other the Golden Eagles came out on top in a 34-21 win. Sadly, this was not the case tonight.
1st half
The Eagles won the toss and will defer to allow the Assumption Knights to receive the opening kick. The Assumption Knights ran the ball extremely well to set themselves up for a touchdown in the first 2 minutes of the game. Once the Wahlert Golden Eagles got the ball back, there were a few miscues on the offense. Their opening drive was not as successful, and they were forced to punt. Knights were also unsuccessful in their next drive and punt to the Golden Eagles, receiving it on their own 19-yard line. Michael Borman ran downfield for a 76-yard run to get the Eagles to their first 1st & Goal of the game. Gaige Miller ran in for a 5-yard touchdown then Christopher Schmitt’s kick was blocked. Wahlert was down 6-7 with 6:01 left in the first quarter. The Knights had their own miscues with a false start and then an illegal procedure to push them back to their own 27-yard line. Forced to punt once again it rolls to the Eagles’ 20-yard line.
Wahlert Golden Eagles start the 2nd quarter with a 1st and 10. Turning the ball over on their own half allows for the Assumption Knights to kicked a field goal from the 28-yard line, the Knights up 10-6 with three minutes remaining in the half. The Eagles turn the ball over on their own 16-yard line. This allowed for a Knights touchdown. The extra point was blocked by Tom Scherr, Knights ended the half 16-6.
2nd half
The Wahlert Golden Eagles received the kick but a flag against them pushing them back to 4 & 6th instead of a first down allowed for an Assumption interception at the Golden Eagles 42-yard line. The Davenport Assumption Knights controlled almost the entire 3rd quarter, forcing a fumbled snap and deflected some Eagle passes. With 3:31 left in the 3rd, the Knights had a 41-yard field goal attempt, but this missed wide right. The Eagles got the ball back on their own 20-yard line, moving the ball a handful of yards the quarter ended with an Eagles possession.
Starting the 4th with the ball the Eagles fumbled after two plays and it was recovered by the Knights. The Assumption Knights once again drove the ball down the field to score another touchdown, but the extra point was once again blocked. Knights went up 22-6 with 5:43 left in the game. The Knights’s defense was sloppy after a blocked field goal and had back-to-back personal fouls called against them. The Eagles were able to drive the ball down the field thanks to Kenny Petraitis but came up short after a flag ended their last chance at a touchdown. The Knights ended up scoring on the next drive with an 83-yard touchdown and this extra point was finally good. The Knights went up 30-6 with just under three minutes left in the game. Wahlert could not drive the ball past the 50-yard line and wound up taking a knee to end the game. The Davenport Assumption Knights beat the Wahlert Golden Eagles 30-6.
Highlights
Borman ran for 178 yards, 53 in the first half. Petraitis had 57 yards himself with 43 in the second half. Despite the loss the Golden Eagles still ran for about 300 yards this game. Scheer had multiple receptions throughout the whole game, assisting in moving the team downfield.
Next week, Friday, September 22nd, the Wahlert Gold Eagles will take on Center Point-Urbana’s Stormin’ Pointers at home for their homecoming game!
