Wadsworth defeats Nordonia, 55-14, thanks to strong second half

Macedonia, Ohio – Wadsworth made a statement in Friday evening’s battle for first place in the Suburban League National Division, defeating host Nordonia, 55-14 at Boliantz Stadium.

The Grizzlies got the offense off and running early on. Senior quarterback Will Stack found Kyle Figuray for a 24-yard touchdown toss at the 8:48 mark of the first quarter. This gave Wadsworth an early 7-0 lead.

After a Nordonia punt, Figuray took a carry 24 yards to paydirt. This increased the Grizzly lead to 14-0 with 5:02 left in the first. But the Grizzlies weren’t done yet.

A blocked punt by Wadsworth defensive lineman Parker Ross set the Grizzly offense up in the red zone. They cashed in as Will Stack took a carry one yard to the end zone, pushing the lead to 21-0, early in the second quarter.

Nordonia cut their deficit to 21-7, thanks to a Ben Chesser touchdown toss to senior wide receiver Israel Petite from 40 yards out.

The Grizzlies responded, as Will Stack tossed a ten-yard touchdown to Drew Jones. This increased the lead to 28-7 with 2:21 left in the second quarter.

Nordonia took some momentum going into the half thanks to another Ben Chesser to Israel Petite connection. Their 35-yard connection cut the Knight deficit to 28-14.

Cleveland Browns defensive end Myles Garrett also made a guest appearance at Friday night’s contest.

The Knights drove down the field in the third quarter, looking to cut into their 28-14 deficit. However, they were unable to come up with any points, as their field goal attempt was no good.

Wadsworth marched down the field, capping their drive with Will Stack’s second touchdown run. This one, from two yards out, gave the Grizzlies a 35-14 lead with 34 seconds left in the third quarter.

The Grizzly defense also tallied up points, as sophomore Caden Madigan picked off a Ben Chesser pass, returning it 25 yards to the house. Wadsworth took a 42-14 lead heading to the final stanza.

Will Stack ran for his third score of the game from 20 yards out, pushing the Grizzly lead to 48-14 with 5:12 left. This would trigger the running clock. Sophomore Cooper Gray took a handoff 44 yards to the house for the final points of the game with 36 seconds left.

Wadsworth moves to 6-1 and 4-0 in the Suburban League National Division. They host Stow-Munroe Falls on Friday, October 6th, continuing conference play.

Nordonia, now 6-1 and 3-1 in the Suburban League National Division, travels to Hudson to continue conference play on Friday, October 6th.
