Medina Quarterback Drew Allar Wins Week Five Player Of The Week

The incredible season Drew Allar is having can no longer be ignored after another massive week this past Friday night against Strongsville.  The Penn State commit was 15/18 for 285 yards and 4 total touchdowns; 3 in the air and a 1-yard QB sneak in the first half alone.  He would finish with 474 total yards and 7 touchdowns. Most of Allar’s yards came in the air, going 22/ 32 for 446 yards.

Medina is so stout, and Allar would be the first one to remind you that his receivers are doing a great job getting open. Medina had 4 receivers with over 90 yards receiving and each one hauled in a TD on the night against Strongsville.  They have speed, size and coaching, they have it all.

This performance has earned Drew Allar the Jenny’s Old Fashioned Popcorn Player of the Week for Week 5.  He joins Jack Mikolich and Gage Duesler as the only players to win the award twice.  If you recall, Allar won the award last year for his Week 9 epic playoff performance over St. Ignatius.

All of this was just one week after the much-anticipated showdown with Owen Bainbridge and Stow in which he went for a career high 523 yards passing while tossing 5 touchdown passes. On a side note, remember both of these names, Allar and Bainbridge as both of them have the talent, attitude and desire to do big things in college and perhaps even the pro’s one day.  I’ve had both of these young men on the podcast and they couldn’t have been humbler and more respectful.

Now, while you will never hear Drew or his teammates boast or talk any trash, and that is to be admired, I will say this, “I told you so!”.  I say that joking but at the same time, I mean it.  I knew last season how special this team was.  They play for each other, and they play hard every single snap.

A lot of people over looked them after a 3-3 regular season last year, we didn’t!  I covered them first hand in playoff victories over St. Edward and St. Ignatius that put everyone on notice. I said it then and I will say it now, this team is special!

The craziest thing about this 5-0 run, is that they’re doing it without Luke Hensley who graduated last year.  Luke was one of the greatest athletes I have ever seen play high school football.  He could catch anything thrown his way and just made one big play after another. People will go on and on about the wideouts from Massillon and Hoban going D-1 last year, but for my money, Hensley was the best.

This speaks volumes about head coach Larry Lairds offense, and his ability to work with any personal out there.  Allar has a special connection with receivers Drew Hensley, Brennen Schramm, JaJuan Jackson, Michael Rodak, and Matt Rudolph just to name a few.  And when Drew needs to rest his arm for a play or too, they have a dynamic tailback in Matt Spatny behind him.

This weekly award is brought to you by Jenny’s Old Fashioned Popcorn.  They are a family favorite for over 50 years!  They have the tastiest popcorn you will ever enjoy.  It comes in every flavor you could think of, including their WORLD FAMOUS triple Mix.  They even have dittos for the kiddos.
