University School Skates Past Holy Name in Regular Season Opener 11-1

Parma, OH- University School came out with a vengeance to beat Holy Name 11-1 in the regular season to begin their conquest to return to the state finals where they lost 6-2 against Olentangy Liberty.

To start the first period, it was the Green Wave who made the first mark on the game. Shane Triscari was able to find the back of the net with the assists coming from Braxton Bartone and Tommy Cardenas. However, it only took 2 minutes for a Prepper reply as Anthony Messina found the back of the net. A few minutes later, University School found their second as Sam Wade scored his first goal of the contest to make it a 2-1 US lead. 52 seconds later, the Preppers made it 3-1 as Gavin Jones scored his first goal of the night. Holy Name’s defense held up for the next 7 minutes. However, a late faceoff in University’s final third led to a Sam Robinson goal to make it 4-1 heading into the second period.

To begin the second period, US waited 5 minutes for Jones to score his second goal of the night to make it 5-1. 66 seconds later, Luca Garofalo extended the Prepper lead 6-1. University School kept breaking down Holy Name, but the Green Wave held their own against older opposition. University couldn’t be denied long as Wade scored his second goal of the night with 7 minutes left in the second period, giving US a 7-1 lead. Ethan Roberts would make it 8-1 a minute later with an assist from Mark Filippelli. After 5 minutes of back-and-forth play, both teams headed to the locker room before one final period.

University School began the final period with fireworks as Luke Palmer scored 34 seconds in to make it 9-1. Palmer, a returner from last year’s team, had one of the two goals in the state championship last year for the Preppers. Holy Name once again played solid defense and had a few possessions pressing down the ice. However, goals from Wade and Garofalo 49 seconds apart would seal the deal to end the game 11-1. While the final score shows just how impressive this University School team is, a side note must be made for Holy Name’s goalkeeper Emily Sefchik. Facing a legion of shots, the freshman shot stopper recorded 51 saves. This impressive feat was the second time a Holy Name goalkeeper recorded 40 or more saves in a game in any sport this year. The other was Holy Name boys’ soccer goalkeeper Toma Milanovic against Walsh on September 16th.

Looking ahead to the following days, University School will take on Walsh Jesuit November 19th at 1:15 at Brunswick Auto Mart Arena. Holy Name will continue their hunt for regular season win number one on November 19th against Olmsted Falls at 4:15 at Brookyln Rec Center.
