Hunting Valley, Ohio – Thanks to effective pitching and timely hitting, host University School defeated visiting Akron Firestone, 7-1, Saturday afternoon.
After a scoreless first inning, Firestone got a pair of runners on base due to a pair of walks. A sacrifice bunt moved both runners up 90 feet, and the Falcons were looking to jump ahead early.
However, Riley Penn got out of the jam thanks to a strikeout and groundout, and University School responded in their half of the second.
Ryan Pattison led off with a double to center field. Junior infielder (and Kent State commit) Evan Shapiro followed up with an RBI single. A bases-loaded walk brought in a second run, and Brian Elliott hit a single to right-field, increasing the lead to 3-0.
The Preppers would add another on a fielder’s choice, and led 4-0 after two innings.
Matthew McMahon increased the Prepper lead to 5-0 with an RBI single in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Sophomore Riley Penn was brilliant out of the pen, throwing four innings of relief and allowing just one hit on two walks. He also struck out six batters.
His lone hit allowed came in the top of the fifth inning when Firestone senior Devin James hit a double to left field with two out.
Firestone got on the board for their lone run of the game in the top of the sixth, thanks to a bases-loaded walk with two outs.
University School responded with a pair in the bottom half of the sixth on wild pitches.
Junior infielder Ben Elliott went 3 of 4 n the game with an RBI.
University School (8-3) hosts Mentor on Wednesday afternoon.
Firestone (3-3) hosts Nordonia on Monday afternoon.
