UFC on ESPN: Cannonier vs. Imavov Takeaways

After a lackluster undercard that saw 7 of 8 fights go the distance, the main card was red hot as the final five of six fights ended violently.  Here are the hot takes of the main card.

Punahele Soriano defeats Miguel Baeza 30-25, 30-25, 30-27

This was dominant from Soriano.  It makes you wonder with that performance from Baeza if this will be his last on the main card for a very long time to come.  For Soriano, this win improves his record to 10-4 while ending a two fight losing streak.  For Baeza, this is now his fourth straight loss, after starting his career 10-0.

Zachary Reese knockouts Julian Marquez in 20 seconds.

Reese has not seen a second round yet in his 11 fight pro career, as this knockout improved his dominant record to 11-0 with a incredible UFC debut. It was a one combination knockout that dropped Marquez, and also dropped his record to 9-5.   Reese appears to be the real deal, and I’m beyond excited to see where this young mans career goes from here.

Brunno Ferreira knocks out Dustin Stoltzfus by spinning back elbow

It has only happened a handful times in UFC history, but when it does, it is incredible!  Stoltzfus has an incredible chin as he took a elbow earlier in the round and kept coming forward, the second one however put him on queer street.

Brunno now has 12 pro wins with 10 of them coming in the first round by knockout as this young man can bring the thunder!

Raul Rosa Jr. Submits Ricky Turcios by rear naked choke at 2.22 of the second round.

Rosa worked his way to 9-1 with a workmanlike victory.  Rosa can do a lot of things right until he wears his opponent down into submission.  He cuts a fast pace and few can keep up.

Dominick Reyes knocks out Dustin Jacoby in 2 minutes flat.

Dustin Jacoby is a 14-year UFC veteran, earning his spot at the top of the card.  However, he was facing a determined Dominick, a guy who once took Jonny Bones Jones to an extremely narrow decision.  This made for an interesting fight but it was only a matter of time before the long limbs of Reyes would connect, and that is exactly what occurred.

Reyes is a long way away from being that guy who fought Jones in 2020 as he had been knocked out in three straight fights since Jones.  Perhaps tonight was what he needed to bounce back.

Nassourdine Imavov knocks out Jared Cannonier in the Main Event of the evening.

The fight lagged at times, and then had flashes as well until Imavov put Cannonier away for good in the fourth. This win improves his record 14-4-1 and 6-2-1 in the UFC.  A big win for over a World Championship challenger in Cannonier, it will be interesting to see what he does with the momentum.
